Letter to the editor: Absolute power corrupts absolutely

To the editor,

In the Aug. 26, 2026 Piece County Journal, there was a quote from Sheriff Koranda which caused me great concern. His quote: "I can tell you that if I wasn't the sheriff, I'd be really, really worried about who was in control of that stuff.” (Flock camera data). Koranda said, "I'm asking you that you trust me and trust my department that we would use this tool correctly."

We currently have a person in the highest office in the nation. Who has often said that only he can solve the problems of this nation, and that we should "trust" him. We are currently witnessing how well that is working out at the national level.

The quote from Mr. Koranda implies precisely the reason his trustworthiness, and his department, should be challenged. It implies that only he and his department are trustworthy and to not trust anyone else who could hold the office other than him. Only him. He is telling us straight up not to look "behind the green curtain.” Most of us know of the statement: Absolute power corrupts absolutely. This statement is fully visible on the national stage and Mr. Koranda is stating to us all that he wants absolute authority in Pierce County regarding Flock cameras. It’s not right at a national level and is not right at a state or county level.

Koranda's quote should be frightening to us all.
