Reckless tycoon Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, has poured $6 million into Brad Schimel’s campaign in the upcoming race for Wisconsin’s state Supreme Court. Why is Musk interested in our state?
Since the election of Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz in 2023, our Supreme Court has been able to moderate the extreme Republican-dominated state legislature and establish a degree of fairness in our political and civic life. Musk’s $6 million nakedly aims to buy back our state for Donald Trump and his GOP enablers Derrick Van Orden, Tom Tiffany, and others.
A vote for Judge Susan Crawford will help make sure that doesn’t happen. Judge Crawford has defended working people, protected affordable health care, and supported police and the rule of law. Her opponent, the Musk-funded Schimel, has sued to repeal the Affordable Care Act and supported Trump’s pardon of violent insurrectionists who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
In Trump’s short time back in office, we have already witnessed brazen corruption in Trump’s collaboration with an unelected billionaire. Trump has called off investigation into schemes that will enrich him by many millions while in office, and Musk, unelected but given unconstitutional power by Trump, is well known to have built his fortune on taxpayer-funded sweetheart deals.
We need a fair and honest Supreme Court to help defend Wisconsinites against the Trump/Musk corruption and attempts to weaken the social safety net that keeps millions of Americans out of poverty. The GOP’s Project 2025 fattens the rich with gratuitous tax breaks while starving the rest of us through elimination of vital services. Nearly half of retired Americans, for example, depend on Social Security as their main source of income, so an attack on it is an attack on senior citizens, whom we claim to value. And GOP assaults on Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans’ health programs, if successfully carried out, will make life more dangerous for us all.
It’s abundantly clear which candidate will protect the rights and safety of Wisconsinites. Vote for Judge Susan Crawford in the April 1 election.
