To the editor,
I submitted comments to the DNR about the expansion of Ridge Breeze dairy operation last month prior to July 18. Some of my constituents serving as their County Board member have asked that I also submit these comments to the PC Journal as a letter to editor.
I am a farmer, County Board Supervisor District 17, and member of the Land Conservation Committee in Pierce County. I have personally observed issues of concern regarding soil erosion and loss of manure nutrients on multiple parcels of land that Ridge Breeze applies manure.
These fields are HEL, some with large acreages with no or inadequate waterways, thereby gully and rill erosion is out of control. My observations occurred both in May of 2023 and 2024 after a rain event. The drainage area leaving the fields was extremely muddy runoff.
I notified Pierce County LCD and they did an assessment of the damage and notified proper people and agencies. As a member of the LCC for decades, Ridge Breeze’s farming practices are very concerning regarding loss of soil and manure nutrients which many in Pierce County have worked very hard to prevent. I have personally talked to the managers of Ridge Breeze about the use of cover crops to minimize soil erosion similar to what Fetzer Farms does. Haven’t seen any cover crops used.
There is another concern about the amount of land acres necessary for the nutrient management plan for Ridge Breeze dairy and agreements with landowners. I have heard some landowners have withdrawn their acreage and this needs to be further investigated.
I have serious concerns about this expansion under current conditions and ask the DNR to deny this expansion permit until Ridge Breeze can provide documentation of improving their business operations by responsible and environmentally sound operations.
