To the editor,
I would like to conclude my discussion by first addressing the false virtue signaling of those who claim, “all are welcome” and “unity not division.” If this is truly what they believe, then why do they constantly stir up hatred based on any combination of demographic attributes? Why do they shun peaceful debate and embrace violence? It seems the real goal is to enflame intersectional hatred rather than heal communities. Alarmingly, these ideologues are being empowered not only around the country, but right here in Wisconsin. What could violate human dignity more than sowing hate between different groups of people?
Part and parcel, it is also important to address illegal immigration since it violates the human dignity of immigrants and citizens alike. One side of the political spectrum sees the issue in terms of cheap labor at best and a national security risk at worst. The other side exploits this to build a permanent underclass, unassimilated and addicted to government social programs, to leverage them for future political advantage. Say nothing of the injustices committed against American citizens whose votes are diluted; who are neglected by employers resisting payment of a fair wage; and who pay for the many assistance programs that support the vast majority of these families—at the expense of actual citizens for whom these programs were originally intended.
To this end, the Catholic Church acknowledges the dignity of every human being because they are made in the image and likeness of God, and so all persons must be treated with fraternal love. Catholicism also promises true social harmony, but only if we change our hearts and collectively acknowledge worship of God and Christian morality as the central pillars of a just society. Specifically with regard to immigration, the Catechism of the Catholic Church acknowledges the duty of a country to secure its borders in accordance with public safety and the common good; that immigrants must respect the nation’s laws; and that they must integrate into society to assist with carrying the civic burden. All immigrants deserve decent and humane treatment; however, this does not mean that Catholics must acquiesce when faced with the grave injustices caused by illegal immigration. We must speak on this issue with Christian love for all involved.
During my discourse, I have addressed how secular society violates the human dignity of children, women, communities, immigrants, and citizens. This is just a small, concise sample of the myriad ways our society undermines human dignity, but I must move on to why the Catholic faith is the only answer to a holistically renewed society. All said, remember that Christ is calling you to be a force for true justice and unity!
Until the next, may God bless you!
