To the editor,
We all agree we need sources of sustainable energy including wind farms. It is estimated approximately 1 million birds and about 2 million bats are killed each year by the rotating turbines. This is not insignificant.
However, collisions with buildings kill about 600 million birds a year, and vehicle collisions kill over 200 million birds a year. But the big shocker is outdoor cats kill a staggering 2.4 billion birds per year in the United States, 70% killed by feral and unowned cats.
So if you own cats keep them inside, If you feed or occasionally shelter feral cats, instead catch and take them to a shelter. At the very least they need to be neutered. I have had people tell me, “my little kitty doesn’t eat birds.” Wrong! Cats are predators. Birds are food, or even worse, playthings to torture.
Please be responsible cat owners before the sound of birds singing becomes a memory of the past.
