To the editor,

Are you tired of the political campaigning yet? I am as are many of my friends as we try to know the truth. As a senior citizen, I have been around for many campaigns and I have come to the following conclusions about many political candidates, regardless of party affiliation:

  • Many candidates will know their audience and talk about topics in a way to look good in front of those audiences. They will aim to please their audience.
  • Many candidates will use the “fear card” to make you think voting for the opponent will make your life very bad.
  • Many candidates will tell you that they are going to uphold our democracy while the opponent will destroy our democracy. Do we know what a democracy is?
  • Many candidates are very good and clever how they answer questions from the press. Or should I say how they avoid answering the question. It is very frustrating when a candidate will talk around a question and never give you a direct answer. This is especially true when a candidate feels that the question will make them look bad.
  • Are you familiar with the saying, “Liars figure and figures lie?” Any candidate can come up with statistics to justify whatever they want to justify.
  • Many candidates will try to tell the truth but many times they don’t tell the “whole” truth or they stretch the truth. They can leave out part of the truth to make themselves look good. Also, some will speculate what the opposing candidate will do when it is only speculation.
  • Many will tell you what they will do if in office and/or what their opponent will do in office but only say it to make them sound good and their opponent bad.

Therefore, what do we believe? I think the best way is look at what the candidates have done in their past official positions. If you like the way they have governed and what they have stood for, then it is best to assume that they will continue along that same line. As you look at candidates, those who have been liberal have stayed liberal and those who are conservative have stayed conservative.

In conclusion, vote and look forward to the days after the election when campaigning will take a break until the next election.
