Letter to the editor: Looking at the facts

To the editor,

The Dec. 31 Op-Ed " The Facts About CAFOS..." states that “we follow the rules Wisconsin has established" and that "conversations should start with facts not fear." So let's look at the facts.

  • The Wisconsin DNR regulates CAFO waste storage and manure application but does not address other important issues.
  • Local CAFO ordinances generally regulate HOW they operate not WHERE they are sited.
  • Town ordinances require CAFOs to submit common sense plans for waste management, air quality, carcass disposal and importantly road management.
  • To the last point, I personally witnessed multiple semi-tanker trucks that were hauling liquid manure for spreading, damage a township road, potentially creating taxpayer expense to repair.
  • Those who support these ordinances are not anti-farm, realize the importance of agriculture and include local farmers.
  • Finally these local ordinances allow townships to address issues that directly impact town residents and that Wisconsin state regulations do not address.
