To the editor,
The Pierce County Fair appears to have tossed senior citizen fair attendees under the bus this year. For years Friday was Senior Citizen Day at the fair. With reduced gate prices and we came to the fair by the hundreds if not thousands on Friday. This year Senior Citizen Day arbitrarily was changed to Sunday. This forced us seniors to pay full admission prices other days, or miss church, or miss the Fire Department parade or the fair.
Personally, I have attended the fair every year for the last 70 years except for the Covid shutdown year. I was there as a child, as a 4-H member, as a 4-H leader, bringing my children and working as an exhibitor and would not want to venture to guess to how many thousands of my dollars went into the fair coffers over the decades. With this record of historical support from the golden agers like me, they moved our day and our favorite entertainment, The Memories, to Sunday afternoon at the same time as the Fire Department Parade while leaving Pickles the Clown and other events are more prime times.
Maybe it is time for us Golden Agers to show the Fair Committee how important we are to the fair. If we simply boycotted next year, what would happen to attendance figures? How many fewer burgers and hot beef sandwiches would the church stands sell? How much would advertisers lose in sales without us attending?
I would guess a golden ager fair boycott would be a financial disaster for the fair. Think about it when you schedule the 2025 fair!
Incidentally, county board members, remember us seniors vote in every election and vote in the highest percentage of any demographic group, and we have long, unforgiving memories when you toss us under the bus.
