Letter to the editor: Reasonable power

To the editor,

It was heartening to read of our neighbors in St. Croix County who have exhibited a ground swell of grassroot interest in, and opposition to, the agenda of Big Green and of those who continue to promulgate, especially in our youth, a worst-case scenario fear of carbon dioxide.

It shows that absent publicized, researched facts (has anyone ever told you how much a solar panel costs – in resources, manufacturing, bang-for-buck cost) – we Americans can yet figure out that the environmental, aesthetic and social consequence of covering current living and breathing ecosystems with black plastic panels, to install miles of new transmission lines and huge battery storage vaults, will be more harmful than beneficial.

Nuclear power, used successfully and economically for decades in our Navy, can provide what a million solar panels or a thousand wind turbines can, and do so 24/7/365. The technology for small-scale nuclear power plants is already tested. I have urged our local power company to expend as much money and time on nuclear as on solar. The board members have all read what I recommend to you, the book “Apocalypse Never: Why Environmental Alarmism Hurts Us All” by Michael Schellenberger, Harper, 2020.
