To the editor,
May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to acknowledge the very real mental health struggles that many of our young people face. In Wisconsin, rates of depression and anxiety among youth have risen sharply in recent years, a crisis worsened by isolation, academic pressure, and social media stress.
While there is no single solution to this complex issue, opportunities for healing and growth do exist — sometimes in the most unexpected places. At Lost Creek Ranch, we’ve heard something remarkable from families year after year: our summer horse camps have been described as “lifesaving.”
Our five-day summer riding day camps aren’t just about horses — they’re about connection. Campers ages 7 to 15 experience the joy of riding, build confidence, and form deep friendships, all in a safe, supportive environment. With daily riding instruction, hands-on horse care, crafts, and games — plus a 3:1 staff-to-rider ratio — kids leave stronger, calmer, and happier.
For many, the emotional bond with animals and the sense of accomplishment in mastering new skills create real breakthroughs. Some riders who came to us struggling with anxiety or low self-esteem have found peace in the saddle and the courage to carry that strength into their daily lives.
Our five-day summer day camps are now open for registration, and we encourage families to learn more. Investing in your child’s emotional well-being is just as important as their physical or academic development — and sometimes, a summer camp can change everything.
