Letter to the editor: The end of American exceptionalism

To the editor,

For decades, America has stood at the pinnacle of global leadership. Since the end of World War II, we have been at the forefront of innovation, pioneering groundbreaking technologies, connecting the world through the internet, and pushing the boundaries of space. But now, we find ourselves at a crossroads.

The president has decided that the United States no longer needs allies, dismissing the value of trade partnerships and viewing our democratic friends as burdens. Instead, he turns to dictators and authoritarian regimes, embracing those who oppose the very freedoms we once championed.

Even more alarming, he sees the Constitution not as the foundation of our democracy but as an obstacle to his personal ambitions. He has openly echoed the words of Napoleon, saying, "He who saves his country, violates no law." But who decides what it means to “save” a country? If the answer is one man, unchecked and unchallenged, then we are no longer a democracy.

I fear that those on the right will not read this—that many are trapped in an echo chamber, unwilling to acknowledge the dangers ahead. But this appeal must be made. America cannot recover from the grip of an authoritarian leader without Republicans standing against him.

Less than a decade ago, conservatives spoke passionately about the Constitution, some even vowing to defend it with their lives. And yet today, they have elevated a man who is determined to dismantle it. Who will stop him?

Democrats are too weak, too disorganized. Republicans—those who once championed liberty—are enabling this new era of American tyranny. Who is left?

Stopping this power grab will require a united front. Every day that passes, more authority is consolidated into the executive branch. The question is: when will you say enough?

If you want to debate amendments to the Constitution—fine. If you want to restructure federal agencies like the Department of Education or consumer protections—fine. These are discussions we can have, within the framework of the Constitution.

But your leader is ignoring the Constitution entirely.

Will you cheer? Will you applaud this unprecedented expansion of government power? Or will you stand against it before it’s too late?
