To the editor,
It appeared most farmers and other rural residents supported and voted for Trump for president. He has not returned the favor. Not only will the tariffs (Trump’s “most beautiful word”) negatively impact sales of US agricultural products (why would Europe, Mexico, Canada, etc. pay tariffs when they can import soybeans and corn at less cost from Brazil – to the detriment of the rain forest?), but millions of dollars in promised federal payments remain frozen by the Trump administration.
On his very first day in office Trump issued an executive order that paused the disbursement of all funds linked to Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. This included $22.6 billion in agriculture-related programs. Thousands of farmers had already made investments based on the promised funding. This has left many in financial straits.
Moreover, those “illegal immigrants” that Trump wants totally deported comprise a large percentage of the workers getting up at 4 a.m. to milk our nation’s dairy herds. Unfortunately a man “born with a silver spoon in his mouth” is more likely to give tax breaks to his kindred spirits, than worry about the people who work the land.
