Letter to the editor: We are all immigrants

Posted

To the editor,

As a reader, I found Melvin Pittman's statements to Dr. Jackie Brux re: her letter to The Journal to be condescending at best. He states his desire to Dr. Brux that he "looks forward to the day when your eyes will be truly opened" (as he must believe his are) vis a vis immigration and other issues. Not much conciliation there!

May I remind Mr. Pittman that all of us, including he and I, are either immigrants or the descendants of immigrants to the United States of America (with the exception of indigenous Native Americans, and even their ancestors traveled and migrated to the Western Hemisphere)! I don't disagree with Mr. Pittman that there are substantial issues and problems regarding immigration that must be addressed, so I find that his last statement that "some of us are aware and others not" is a gross simplification of a complex issue.

Perhaps he and I can visit sometime about both of our European immigrant backgrounds without going off on a tangent.
