To the editor,
It is interesting how Republicans at the national scene including Wisconsin’s Johnson and Van Orden, and locals (Stafsholt, Zimmerman) are responding (or not responding) to the three-ring circus in Washington, DC. Republicans claim they are for the Constitution, law and order, and “will of the people.” Here they are upset by the money spent by Soros on the Supreme Court race but have no problem with the millions given by Musk – it’s simply his right to “free speech.” In Madison, they argue for election integrity but ignore Musk coming into the state, paying individuals $200 to sign his political “agreement to vote for Schimel,” and sponsoring a lottery for two $1 million prizes. This is election integrity?
Republican politicians and Trump have decried on TV the deplorable (and it is) violence directed against Tesla dealerships and perpetrators need to be punished to the full extent of the law. But the violence used on January 6 at the Capitol against the Capitol police and the damage done to the Capitol was just a “peaceful protest.” Most are silent on Trump’s pardon of ALL convicted rioters. What a bunch of hypocrites!
Apparently, ICE can just round up and deport anyone Trump doesn’t like, simply by declaration, no due process needed. Yes, we need to get criminals out of the country but there are constitutional procedures that have to be followed or innocent people will get ensnared.
The tariff issue is really a hoot. Trump has said on TV that tariffs are going to “bring billions of dollars into the US” because “the selling country pays the tariff.” He knows that millions of people don’t understand trade, tariffs, or inflation and will believe it just because he says it. Bringing “exported” manufacturing jobs back will take months, more likely years. Then what about prices? The factories were sent to China, other Asian countries, or Mexico to utilize $3 per hour labor. Those working Americans who believe Trump is going to make America financially Great Again are going to be in for a big surprise.
