Daniel Gene Riley, 42, Hampton, was charged Feb. 10 with felony burglary in the third degree to commit theft or felony or gross misdemeanor and felony possession of burglary or theft tools in Dakota County Court.

On Feb. 8, a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the road on 140th Street East near Conley Avenue was received. When officers arrived, they found footprints and sled tracks from the vehicle to an abandoned residence marked “no trespassing.” The vehicle was registered to Riley.

While searching the property, they observed an individual, Riley, wearing a headlamp and ordered him to stop. Riley fled on foot before being taken into custody. He was placed under arrest and during a search of his person, officers found a pair of pliers, a knife, and drug paraphernalia.

Officers determined during a search of the property and several of the outbuildings on the property, that buildings had been entered and items had been collected to be removed later. A bucket of electrical cords was placed on the ground next to a trail of footprints.

Riley told officers he knew of the property “through an acquaintance and decided to come by and poke around.” According to the complaint, Riley admitted that he didn’t have permission to be on the property and also that “he intended to take several items he located and resell them for money, including several extension cords he had placed in a bucket to transport.” Riley was booked into the Dakota County Jail.
