Outdoor Tales & Trails: Definition of a trophy buck

Posted

Welcome to the 2023 Deer Gun Season. Today's topic: Bucks and more bucks. It will be an abbreviated version of OTT because I’m packing up to go hunting.

In just a few days some 400,000 of my hunting brothers and sisters will gather for the same singular goal of bagging a monster buck. I have always maintained that the only other thing that gathers more people together in Wisconsin for a common purpose is the Green Bay Packers. I’ll save that debate for another time so back to the deer numbers. Converting the harvest total from the last few years to easy math: If you're hunting with four people, two will bag their deer. Of those two hunters, one will harvest a doe and the other will take a buck. Since everyone wants to buck, that's where today's topic is going to lead us.

Each one of us has our own description of what we consider a trophy when it comes to bucks. If you’re a first-time hunter, or a hunter waiting to bag your first buck, any buck is a trophy. Another hunter may go through the entire season and at the last second bag a buck and no matter the size, they will consider that a trophy. A veteran hunter may pass up bucks waiting for the mythical Turdy Point Buck that never shows but that is his or her definition of a trophy. My point is that we are all different, we have different perspectives and we all have a different definition of a trophy buck.

Having said all that, which buck would you rather take this weekend? Would you rather bag the fairly average 10-pointer or would you take the huge six-pointer?

You can vote for the buck you would harvest by logging onto Facebook “Outdoor Tales and Trails with Dave Beck.” If your choice is the ten-pointer, hit “Love.” If your choice is the six-pointer hit “Like.” Results will be posted next week.

Remember to send in your hunting photos. Good luck and be safe!
