Board Chair Jeff Holst is unseated by newcomer

By Sarah Nigbor

The voters have spoken and the April 5 election results are in for Pierce County Board and area school boards, city councils and village board races.

Three school districts in Pierce County had referendum questions on local ballots, and all three referenda passed: A $15 million facilities and maintenance referendum for Prescott; a four-year non-recurring operational referendum for Ellsworth; and a three-year non-recurring operational referendum for Plum City.

Of the eight Pierce County supervisors facing challengers, three of those challengers were successful in unseating longtime incumbents: Sheila Lorentz ousted Chair Jeff Holst in District 16; Angela Mathison defeated Paula Lugar in District 9; and Melissa Petersen unseated Bill E. Schroeder by two votes in District 14.

In District 10, newcomer and small business owner Crystal Mooney was unsuccessful in her bid for Rodney Gilles’ seat. District 15’s Jerry Kosin hung onto his seat against challenger Craig Theis. District 1’s Kris Sampson kept her seat after being challenged by Ruth Gredvig. In District 8, nearly 200 votes separated victor Dean Bergseng (incumbent) from Martin Kretzmann. Lastly, Douglas Sjostrom was unsuccessful in his write-in bid for Mel Pittman’s District 17 seat.

Two villages and one city had one less candidate running than the number of trustee/alderperson spots to fill: Spring Valley, Prescott and Ellsworth. Write-in candidate John Peterson secured a Prescott alderperson seat with 24 votes. In Spring Valley, former trustee Matt Huepfel had 65 write-in votes. Tony Hines won a spot on the Ellsworth Village Board with six votes.

Winners are marked with an asterisk*.
