“It’s hard finding good clean carnivals,” member Diane House said in support of the annual celebration, while rumors of cancelling were considered to have been made by unhappy members of the celebration committee.

PRESCOTT JOURNAL

Sept. 18, 1868

The first of a series of “National Games” was played in Vermont on Tuesday between the “first nines” of the Grand and Colfax and Seymour and Blair Clubs.—Through the game the Seymours muffined badly, owing to too stiff a breeze from the North. The next game will be played in Maine.*

*This appears to be a reference to the Election of 1868, featuring Ulysses S. Grant and Schulyer Colfax for the Republican side and Horatio Seymour and Francis Blair Jr. for the Democrats. Grant was the hero of Appomattox and took 78.57 percent of the Vermont vote, along with all of its electoral votes. Seymour got 21.43 percent and no electoral votes.
