Meet Myrna Buchholtz

Myrna Jean Larson Buchholtz was born to Albert and Mary Larson, at home, on the family farm in Buffalo County on Dec. 6, 1929. She joined five sisters and one brother. Of course, they all called her spoiled since you would always find her being rocked in someone’s arms. In fact, she still enjoys rocking to this day, and she remained close to her siblings throughout all her adult life.

Myrna grew up on the family farm and attended the Oak Hill School through the eighth grade. She also attended church with her family at Lyster Lutheran. Although this was during the De pression, Myrna never remembered being hungry.

Following eighth grade, Myrna was hired as a farmer’s wife’s assistant and earned $2 each week. She was responsible to pur chase her own clothes and shoes. As she approached adulthood, Myrna went to work in a Durand restaurant called, the “Sandwich Shop” and lived with her sister Leone in a rental. Her next em ployment was a job at the Egg Station where Leone was her boss! Soon after, Myrna moved on to work at the milk plant.

One night, Myrna joined her sister and brother in law for din ner, and that is where she met her husband, Robert Buchholtz. They were married on Feb. 2, 1949 at Lyster Lutheran Church near Urne. Myrna and Bob were blessed with three sons: David in 1951, Tom in 1953, and Dennis in 1961.

Myrna kept busy raising these three sons. In 1963, with the boys in school, she went to work at the Durand Chippewa Valley Hospital in the dietary department. She worked there for 31 years before retiring. But retirement didn’t keep Myrna from staying busy. She worked at the Senior Center, driving folks to appoint ments and helping to care for people in their homes. This became her favorite job, and the one that paid the most!

In her “spare” time, Myrna also stayed active with the Ladies Aide at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Weekends were spent going to horse pulls, baseball games, thrift sales, dances, Friday night fish frys, and Sunday drives. Time spent at home included the weekly baking of delicious desserts and buns. She was always prepared with her family’s favorite foods whenever the kids or grandchildren would stop in.

Myrna didn’t have the chance to travel far, but she did visit her sisters in Green Bay and Milwaukee. She often went with Bob up to Minong where he would fish and Myrna would “fish” the local garage sales looking for a bargain!

Myrna is a proud grandparent to Tracie, Travis and Jim. She is also a great grandma to four special girls: Katlyn, Megan, Madyson, and Andrea. Myrna joined our Care Center family in May 2019. When she doesn’t have her nose in a book, you might find her at bingo, tending her plants, watching her favorite TV shows or the birds out her window, visiting with family and friends, or enjoying our happy hour events. She has a smile ready for everyone and her friendly personality welcomes all who live, work, and visit here!
