Police issue statement on video at Prescott business

Prescott Police Chief Eric Michaels issued a memo Monday after phone calls were received at Prescott City Hall questioning why police weren’t involved in an incident over the weekend where a man confronts a man reportedly from Stillwater, MN who thought he was arranging a meeting with a 14-year girl.

The man filming the incident reportedly purported to the Stillwater man that he was a 14-year-old girl, and he set up the meeting in the parking lot at Tractor Supply Co. in Prescott. He then confronted the man who thought he was meeting a girl, filmed it and posted it on social media.

Michaels’ statement reads: “The Prescott Police Department recently was made aware of a meeting which took place at the Tractor Supply between two male subjects. We would like to stress to you, the City of Prescott and the Prescott Police Department HAD NO KNOWLEDGE of this meeting taking place beforehand and only learned about it through social media. I have also been made aware there are several phone calls being made to Prescott City Hall asking why we, the Police Department, didn’t do anything.

“The gentleman in the video who arranged this meeting did so on his own accord and did not involve the Prescott Police Department or any other agency. There were no notifications made to any agency (that) this meeting was taking place, and had the police department known this was taking place, this would have been handled in a very different way. For those individuals who have not watched th video, the civilian involved in setting this meeting up clearly stated to the other male, “You play my game, and I don’t go to the police with it.” This is not the way this should have been handled. This gentleman put himself, as well as other, in danger, taking on this adventure.

“The police department is going to look into this incident to determine the best course of action, if any can be made. Unfortunately, while this citizen believes he is doing a good thing, his actions make building a case very difficult against a suspect(s). We have been in contact with other agencies to plan our next course of action.”
