Elmwood/Plum City’s Trevor Asher has career day in walk-off win
By Reagan Hoverman
It was a bounce-back second week of the football season for the boys of Pierce County as Prescott, Spring Valley and Elmwood/Plum City all secured convincing victories in the final week of non-conference football this season.
Perhaps the most exhilarating win in Wisconsin this season was the Elmwood/Plum City walk-off victory at home against Blair-Taylor on Friday, Aug. 26. The 26-20 victory for the Wolves came at the buzzer, as senior quarterback Trevor Asher scored the game-winning touchdown with two seconds remaining.
Elmwood/Plum City and Blair-Taylor had battled throughout the game and with 16 seconds left in the fourth quarter, sophomore quarterback Ethan Knisley found senior wide receiver Zack Nitek in the endzone to tie the game 20-20. Blair-Taylor’s two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
On the ensuing possession, Elmwood/Plum City had enough time for a couple of plays. On the first play, senior quarterback Trevor Ash er saw daylight and broke loose for a 62-yard touchdown with only two seconds remaining in the game.
The game-winning touchdown scamper for Asher was essentially a walk-off, as time expired on the ensuing kickoff. The 26-20 victory improves Elmwood/Plum City’s record to 1-1 for the season entering Dunn-St. Croix Conference play starting next week.
Asher finished the game with 320 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries. Asher and the Wolves begin conference play on Friday, Sept. 2, at home against Glenwood City. That game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
Spring Valley defeats Chetek-Weyerhaeuser 41-0 After losing a close game last week, the Spring Valley Cardinals left no question about the outcome on Friday night on the road against Chetek-Weyerhaeuser in a blowout game that was essentially over by halftime.
Spring Valley scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 13-0 lead in what appeared as if it could be a close game. That all changed in the second frame when the Cardinals’ offense exploded and scored 28 points to make it 41-0 at halftime.
In total four different Cardinals scored six total touchdowns in that Friday night road game. Junior running back Diego Schmitt accounted for a pair of touchdowns and 53 yards on nine carries.
Senior running back Justin Rielly joined the fun with a pair of rushing touchdowns of his own, in addition to 110 yards on only three carries. Junior quarterback Wyatt Goveronski scored his lone touchdown on a 24-yard carry midway through the second quarter.
Sophomore utility player Cade Stasiek capped off the Cardinals’ scoring with a nine- yard touchdown run late in the second quarter to make it 41-0 in favor of Spring Valley. Head coach Ryan Kapping sent in reserves to get valuable experience in the second half.
Spring Valley improves to 1-1 for the season ahead of Dunn-St. Croix Conference play beginning this week. The Cardinals open league play on the road against Boyceville on Friday, Sept. 2. That game will begin at 7 p.m.
Prescott beats Durand 33-22 to get back to .500 The Prescott Cardinals got back to .500 for the season with a 33-22 victory over non-conference opponent Durand on Friday, Aug. 26.
After a tough loss on the road against #1 ranked Regis in week one, Prescott’s offense bounced back with a 33-point performance, in large part because of the continued success in the passing game.
These aren’t the Aiden Russell Cardinals of last season. After graduating a Middle Border Conference standout in Russell from last year’s backfield, Prescott has transitioned into a dynamic passing attack that has thrown the ball more than 25 times in both games this season.
In week one, sophomore quarterback Teddy Bernick threw the ball 28 times against that stacked Regis defense. In week two, Bernick completed 25 of 36 passing attempts and tallied 253 yards and two touchdowns.
Durand got on the board first midway through the opening frame with an eight-yard touchdown rush and a successful two-point conversion to make it 8-0 Panthers. Prescott’s defense managed to force a safety late in the first quarter to make it 8-2 still in favor of Du rand.
On the first play of the second quarter, Prescott sophomore Barrett Temmers burst through the line of scrimmage and found the endzone for a 45-yard rushing touchdown. A successful PAT made it 9-8 in favor of Prescott.
Four minutes later, Bernick connected with Temmers on a six-yard touchdown pass to make it 15-8 Cardinals. Durand scored two touch- downs in the final three minutes of the first half to take a 22-15 lead going into the intermission.
After a scoreless third quarter by both squads, Prescott scored 18 unanswered points to secure a 33-22 win, the first of Prescott’s 2022 season. Two of those three scores came from the aforementioned Temmers, who scored on three-yard and 56-yard touchdown runs. The other score came via Bernick, who connected with sophomore wide receiver Will Packard on a 51-yard pitch and catch.
Prescott’s dynamic offense featuring young playmakers all around the field was on full dis play in the week two game at home against Durand. The Cardinals begin Middle Border Conference play this week at home against Osceola. That game is on Friday, Sept. 2, and is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
