Rep. Warren Petryk: Honoring our heroes

Posted

We gather on this solemn Veterans Day to honor the men and women who have taken on the duty of defending our nation and preserving our freedom, values, and way of life. It is a day to commemorate, celebrate, and show our sincere gratitude to the soldiers who have served and given their lives in defense of our wonderful country. Ronald Reagan famously remarked, "We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was." I am reminded of this statement on this day.

Veterans are the living example of this dedication to service. They are the courageous individuals who took on the weighty duty of defending our country, and in doing so, they made sacrifices that most of us cannot ever begin to imagine. They've missed family get-togethers, birthdays, and holidays. They have encountered unbelievable difficulties both overseas and at home. As a state legislator, I've had the honor of getting to know a lot of our soldiers, hearing their testimonies, and seeing firsthand their steadfast devotion to our nation. Though they come from a variety of backgrounds and are dealing with a range of issues, they are united by their love and dedication to defend our country.

Additionally, we have an obligation to never forget about or disregard the families of our warriors. Our soldiers truly appreciate their aid, as they have also made sacrifices. Veterans Day is also a day of contemplation, recollection, and redoubled dedication rather than merely a day off from work or school. Today is a time for each of us to reflect on what more we can do to assist and express our thanks to those who have fought the good fight. Today is a day to honor our soldiers' bravery and resiliency for persevering through hardship.

Thus, let's honor our heroes who have served and are still serving on this Veterans Day. Let us give them and their families our sincere gratitude. We pray that we will always remember the sacrifices made by our veterans and that we will always be united in our dedication to honoring their service. May God bless the United States of America and our veterans.
