Shed hunting on wheels

Over the past few months, it’s been tough for me to get out and about and do outdoor things. I’ve briefly mentioned that I had an injury which prevented me from doing some pretty normal things. Just walking has been a challenge and driving my truck has been completely off the table. To say that it’s been a long hard winter is truly an understatement.

This is the time of year when I would normally have a couple of limits of Red Wing walleyes in the freezer. I would also be admiring the shed deer antlers that I had found over the winter months. As mentioned earlier, so far, this has not been a normal year for me. When a friend asked me to go shed antler hunting with him on Saturday where I could use his four-wheeler, I hobbled at the chance. I spent Friday evening making a lunch and loading a backpack for the next day. I was like a new puppy chomping at the bit to get outside.

As I drove around the fields, I couldn’t help but pause every time I encountered a heavily used deer trail leading into the woods. When you can’t walk that trail, it’s easy to imagine a giant matching set of deer horns laying just out of sight. I did take a short walk which resulted in a small digger, reminding me that my place for this shed hunt was on the four-wheeler.

Safely back on the wheeler I motored around to all the likely spots. I checked field edges, water runs and everything in between. I eased around enjoying the day just glad to be outside. The day took on even more importance to me when something in the field ahead of me caught my eye. There, laying points up,
