Shots from the hip: Posthuma, Thomley finish successful careers

Senior Lila Posthuma finished her Prescott basketball career with 1,207 points, the fourth highest career total of any Cardinal player. Posthuma has accepted a basketball scholarship to Bradley University. During her four-year varsity career, the Cardinals finished with a Middle Border Conference record of 47-8.

Congratulations to wrestler Nolan Thomley on finishing his final season with an overall record of 45-11. In last week’s WIAA Division 2 Tournament, Thomley pinned Odair Porras of Whitewater in his first-round match. Thomley then dropped the next two matches to end a stellar Cardinal career that saw him win 98 matches. Koy Hopke of Amery won his fourth consecutive state championship.

The Omro Foxes (21-3) are the only team in the Arcadia Sectional ranked in the Top 10 in latest Wisconsin Sports Network Division III State Rankings. The Foxes are champions of the Flyway Conference and have four players that average in double figures. Elk Mound (20-4) received the top seed in the bottom half of the Arcadia Sectional. Bloomer (21-3), the champions of the Western Cloverbelt Conference, are the #2 seed in the top half of the sectional bracket.

Michigan Tech women's basketball junior guard Isabella Lenz scored a career-high 23 points to complete its first GLIAC road weekend sweep in a 70-58 win at Saginaw Valley on Saturday afternoon. Last Thursday Lenz scored 10 points, collected a team high eight rebounds, and paced the Huskies with six assists as Michigan Tech defeated Wayne State by a score of 95-75. Michigan Tech improves to 10-6 in conference play and 14-10 overall. The Huskies close out the regular season hosting Davenport University and Grand Valley State. Lenz is expected to score her 900th career point for Michigan Tech this week.

The Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association has implemented an eight-week pilot program where 100 basketball referees in 11 different counties statewide have been wearing body cameras while officiating high-school basketball games. With the number of abuse-toward-referee incidents increasing around the country the pool of game officials has decreased all over the United States. Game officials volunteered to be a part of the program with well over 100 officials willing to wear the cameras. It will be interesting to see the results.

From the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: A reminder the DNR urges youth users of recreational vehicles and their parents to operate responsibly, including on private lands. Fatal crashes happen on private lands each year, with one fatal UTV crash on private property already in 2024 and six ATV/UTV fatal crashes on private property in 2023. Over the last five years, 70% of fatal crashes involving operators or passengers under the age of 18 took place on private lands. Lack of helmets, not using seatbelts in UTVs and inexperience are among the top factors in these crashes. The same guidelines for helmet and seatbelt use also apply to adults. Wisconsin law requires ATV and UTV operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, who are at least 12 years old for an ATV (and at least 16 years old for UTV) to complete a safety certification course if riding on public lands, roads or another person’s property with permission.

Bemidji State outfielder Hunter Daymond is hitting .286 after eight games with the Beavers. Daymond is a 2020 graduate of Prescott High School.

Heading into this week’s regional opener on Friday, Prescott’s Dallas Wallin has scored 1,638 career points, good for fourth place all time. The Cardinal senior has also pulled down 846 rebounds during his impressive career. Amery, this week’s possible regional tournament opponent, sports the high scoring Wollan brothers. Junior Carter has scored 1,593 points and freshman brother Keaton has scored 397 points.

The Let’s Play Ball Banquet is scheduled for Friday, March 22 at the Old Ptacek’s Event Center. This year’s guest speaker is KFAN Green Bay Packer Sports Personality Dave Sinykin. Cost of the banquet is $30. Stay tuned for further details.

Headshaker of the week: Within the last few years the number of people attending high school sporting events continues to decrease precipitously. Seemingly gone are the days when tournament basketball games used to be one of the toughest tickets in town. Sadly, high school sports appear to be headed in the same direction as European Teenage Club Athletics where fans in the stands are virtually non-existent. Today, few people, other than parents, attend games. Student cheers have been reduced to nothing but negative commentary directed at opposing players. Hopefully this is just a trend. But right now attendance at high school sporting events? It’s a headshaker.
