Shots from the hip: Prescott wrestling on a roll

Cardinal wrestler Nolan Thomley showed few signs of injury as he steamrolled his way to the title at last weekend’s Cashton Invitational. In his opening match, the #8 ranked wrestler in Division 2 pinned Jacob Glidden of North Crawford/Seneca in 53 seconds. Thomley did the same against Jalon Bailey Clark of West Salem/Bangor in just over a minute. The senior captain then bested Brandon Wright of Turtle Lake/Clayton in the title match by a score of 7-1. Thomley enters this Saturday’s WIAA Regional with an impressive overall record of 37-5. Junior wrestler Steve Atherton finished second at 138 pounds advancing to the title match in impressive fashion by pinning Thomas Dreger of West Salem/Bangor and Caston Gosda of Brookwood. Sophomore Jaylen Fleming and freshmen Carter Larsen both finished fourth in their respective brackets. Head Coach Ian Ruble’s charges finished fourth in the 11-team tournament.

Congratulations to Dallas Wallin on scoring his 1,500th point and 800th rebound last week against St. Croix Central. Against the Panthers the talented senior scored a season high 36 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and dished out seven assists in the Cardinal win. Wallin was inching his way toward a career high when a sprained ankle sent him to the bench.

It’s never too early to nominate someone for the Prescott Hall of Fame. Nomination forms and other information are available on the Prescott School District website.

Fans in the stands have noticed considerable differences between both the genre and volume of music being played during timeouts and at halftime during Cardinal boys and girls basketball games. Despite sharing the same fandom, those in charge of “the turn tables” on particular nights are seemingly attempting to cater to different audiences. At times it’s Tom Petty and at others it is rap techno dance music.

Speaking of fans in the stands, let's hope the scant attendance at home games for both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will increase as we move closer to tournament time. Both clubs are currently in first place in the Middle Border Conference.

The Wisconsin Conservation Congress (WCC) invites all Wisconsinites to take part in its annual spring hearing process. The WCC is an independent organization of residents that advises the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on how to responsibly manage Wisconsin’s natural resources. Each year residents have an opportunity to submit ideas as resolutions to the WCC. Wisconsinites can submit proposed resolutions via the online process now through Feb. 26, 2024.

Resolutions must meet the following criteria: The concern must be of statewide impact, The concern must be practical, achievable and reasonable. The concern must be within the mission and vision of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress. An individual citizen may submit no more than two resolutions per year. Those interested in submitting a resolution are encouraged to reach out to the resolution review committee or their WCC County Chair for guidance in drafting a resolution. The Pierce County Chair is Chuck Boley of Beldenville and the WCC Delegates include Bill Koller and Jason Brazzale of Prescott.

Prescott alumnus Isabella Lenz scored 13 points and led the team in assists last Saturday as the Michigan Tech Huskies defeated Northern Michigan on the road by a score of 71-58. Michigan Tech raced to a 27-16 first quarter lead and never trailed enroute to the victory. The win moves Michigan Tech into a tie for third place in the conference standings. This week Lenz will surpass 800 points in her career and is on her way to becoming the 28th player in Michigan Tech Women’s basketball history to score 1,000 points in their collegiate career.

The Prescott High School Fishing Club wrapped up its two weekend tournament on Saturday at Loon Lake in Webster, Wis. Two weeks ago, Prescott sophomore Austin Johnson hauled in a 35-inch northern pike through the ice becoming the second largest fish ever caught by a member of the Prescott Fishing Team. The only fish bested by Johnson’s catch was Cardinal fishing team alumnus Derek Pechacek, who caught a 3- inch northern pike several years ago.

Headshaker of the week: During last week’s Prescott boys’ basketball game against St. Croix Central, the Panther coaching staff began berating the members of the scorers’ table regarding the number of remaining timeouts. After corroborating evidence from others at the table including the game referees, the official scorekeeper’s count was correct. The St. Croix Central coaching staff followed with a five-minute scorekeeper harangue that continued during the post-game handshake line. Both sophomoric and embarrassing. Now that’s a headshaker.
