Spring Election is on the horizon

Posted

Election Day April 1 will be here before we know it and candidates have declared their intentions to run for local offices (city council, village board and school board).

The deadline for incumbents not seeking re-election to file a notice of non-candidacy was Dec. 27, 2024. All papers and forms for those running for office (that are not nominated at a caucus) were due at their respective municipal offices by 5 p.m. Jan. 7, 2025. These include a campaign registration statement, a declaration of candidacy and nomination papers. Signatures on nomination papers had to come from electors who live within the district a candidate is running. They also must be eligible to vote.

The candidates are listed below:

Village of Ellsworth

Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer Brad Roy said the only person to file candidacy papers for Village President was incumbent Becky Beissel. Three trustee seats are open: Incumbents Ryan Bench and Andrew Borner will face Dick Hines, Melissa Petersen and Jarod J. Traynor on the ballot. Trustee Tom Schutz resigned Dec. 17, citing his disgust with perceived lack of transparency and caretaking of taxpayers’ funds.

Village of Elmwood

Incumbent Village President Neil Boltik will run unopposed, along with incumbent trustees Paul Unser and Mark Wolf. Incumbent Patrick Geraets filed non-candidacy papers, but Mike Burke has declared his intent to run for the open seat.

Village of Plum City

Current Village President Douglas Watkins has filed non-candidacy papers, while current Trustee Peggy Gilles will run unopposed for the role. Incumbents Roland Eccles and Sarah Hinrichs will run unopposed for the two open trustee seats.

City of Prescott

Incumbent Maureen Otwell (Ward 2) will run for her seat unopposed, while Alderperson John Peterson (Ward 1) filed non-candidacy papers. According to Clerk Rashel Temmers, no one else filed papers to run for that position.

City of River Falls

Alderpersons Sean Downing (District 1), Diane Odeen (at-large) and Nick Carow (District 2)

will be running for their seats unopposed. District 3 incumbent Alderperson Allysa Mueller filed non-candidacy papers. Those vying for her seat include Reuben Herfindahl, Mark Klecker and former alderperson Michael Page.

Village of Spring Valley

Spring Valley Village President Theresa Koch resigned effective Jan. 31, 2025 and will not be running for re-election, according to Village Administrator Luann Emerson; however, since she already had her nomination papers turned in, she will be the only candidate listed on the ballot for village president. Brad Jorgenson (president pro tem) who is finishing Koch’s term, will be running for village president as a registered write-in.

Three trustee seats are open with five candidates running: Incumbents Liz Erickson and Ruth Lukes and newcomers Mike Martin, Nate Pelz and Crystal Mooney. Trustee Pete Koch filed non-candidacy papers.

Ellsworth School Board

Ellsworth School Board will say goodbye to long-term board member Susan Beck, who has filed non-candidacy papers. Those running for the three open seats include incumbents Julie Lundstrom and Michael Petersen, plus Charles Kummer, who has thrown his hat into the ring. The terms are three years.

Elmwood School Board

Two seats are open on the Elmwood School Board this April; the names on the ballot will be incumbent Adam Garfield and Adam Hartung, both running unopposed. Incumbent Megan Wolf filed non-candidacy papers.

Plum City School Board

The two incumbent Plum City School Board candidates are running for their seats unopposed: Adam Goethel and Kris Ingli.

Prescott School Board

Incumbents Mike Matzek (current board president) and Vicki Rudolph will run for their respective seats unopposed in Prescott.

River Falls School District

Incumbents Lindsey Curtis and Mike Miller will run for their two open seats unopposed.

Spring Valley School District

All three incumbents up for re-election for three-year terms filed non-candidacy papers: Bobbie Jaeger, April Robelia and Dan Stasiek. Voters will have five names to pick from on the April 1 ballot for the three seats: Stacy Schultz, Beth Ingli, Monica Shafer, Ryan Glaus and Stephanie J. Supri.

The villages of Bay City and Maiden Rock, plus Pierce County’s 17 townships will hold caucuses in January to determine names on the ballot for April 1.
