morning with the fog gently lifting off the newly turned green fields. Now what sounds better: Winter is ending soon, or A SPRING TURKEY HUNTING PERMIT? Exactly!
Now I know that my season is still 77 days away (trust me, that number is accurate) I can’t help but get excited. The fact that I know my season is 77 days away should tell you that. A smile instantly came across my face when I found “The Postcard” while sifting through the mail. I started to wonder: Where are all of my decoys, how many shells do I have left over from last year, are all of my calls in the same place, and will the blind be good enough to make it through another year? It was as if I was going hunting tomorrow instead of two and a half months from now. Actually, hunting for turkeys can be a whole heck of a lot of fun but daydreaming about it and getting ready for it is fun too. Anything I can do to chew up some time on the clock to get us closer to spring is a good thing.
So today we celebrate Groundhog Day. The hope is that he does not see his shadow meaning the end of winter is near. It’s a game of chance either way and no matter what, we still need to get through some more cold and snow. We need to create a “Festivus” kind of holiday celebrating the hope, high expectations, and warmth of getting the notice that spring is coming and so is turkey hunting.
