Texas man charged after knocking Prescott man out

An arm-wrestling match at a Prescott bar last summer resulted in one man getting knocked out and another facing a felony battery charge.

Bartley John Gorman, 33, Fort Worth, Texas, was ordered to pay $2,500 cash bond March 10 on a felony aggravated battery – intend bodily harm charge. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of up to six years in prison and/or fines up to $10,000.

According to the complaint:

At 10:31 a.m. Aug. 25, 2024, a Prescott man called police to report he’d been knocked out during an assault at Scab’s Bar (145 Broad St.) the day before. When he woke up in the morning with a fat lip and bruised tissue inside his mouth, he decided he wanted to press charges. Officers went to his place of employment and took photos of his face and lip.

Police obtained camera footage of the incident from Scab’s, which showed a man wearing a black tank top, black shorts and black baseball cap sitting, and later standing by the table nearest to the entrance door. He was speaking to another man wearing a black T0shirt, black baseball cap and jeans. It appeared the two men were arm wrestling.

The man wearing the tank top exited the bar and another man, the victim, was near the door when the man who left came back into the bar to arm wrestle the other man again. The two who had been arm wrestling seemed to have a disagreement at the table.

A man with dark hair wearing a white T-shirt, khaki pants and white tennis shoes was sitting at the corner of the bar near the arm-wrestling table. He was identified as Gorman. He stood up, walked over to the table and put his right out, appearing to stop the arm wrestling. The man in the black tank top said something to him and Bartley hit him with his right then left fist. Bartley then approached the victim and hit him with both fists, causing him to fall to the floor on his back. It appeared the victim, who was not arm wrestling anyone, had been knocked out and temporarily lost consciousness.

Gorman then hit the man wearing the blank tank top again, who was still standing near the table, and an unknown man wearing a blue shirt attempted to stop the fight. Gorman tried to hit this man, then left the bar.

Gorman later contacted police and said he was on his way to the airport to fly back to Texas. He is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. April 14.
