Tourism Committee presents 2024 review, focuses on marketing & event support for Prescott

PRESCOTT – As the city representative on the Tourism Committee, which was established in July 2022, Deputy Clerk/Treasurer Beth Lansing presented the 2024 Tourism Committee review to the Prescott City Council March 10. Lansing explained that the State of Wisconsin mandates that Airbnbs and VRBO-type businesses collect room taxes and remit them to local communities. She added that this revenue is the primary funding source for the Tourism Committee.

The main goal of the Tourism Committee, Lansing explained, is “Beds and Heads:” Aiming to bring tourists to the city to stay overnight and support local businesses. In 2024, the committee awarded five grants, defined its mission within the community, and worked with a marketing firm to launch the Travel Prescott Facebook page, which highlights local businesses and community events. Lansing noted that the committee’s biggest event of the year was Winterfest.

“Winterfest really focuses on the businesses being involved and part of it,” Lansing said.

The event included Bingo and a euchre tournament and saw nearly all downtown restaurants participate, with the Old Ptacek’s Event Center hosting a beanbag tournament and showcasing two evening bands.

One of the tourism grants went to Fairy Wonderland Park to support their food truck event during Prescott Daze.

“We give them money to help market their event,” Lansing explained.

Additionally, Freedom Park hosted three music nights, providing free live music for the community. The Orange Dragon Art Gallery held a Winter Exhibit opening reception on Nov. 8, showcasing a new artist.

“They said their event was one of the biggest ones that they’ve ever had and partially due to us giving them extra funds for marketing,” Lansing said.

Looking ahead, Lansing shared the 2025 budget for the committee, which includes plans for more expansive marketing efforts, including the possibility of a Travel Prescott commercial. The committee projects receiving $40,532.19 in room tax revenue for 2025, with 30% allocated to the city, 25% to the Chamber, and the remaining funds earmarked for marketing expenses, grant requests, and reserve funds.

The council approved the 2025 Tourism Committee budget, supporting continued efforts to promote Prescott as a thriving destination for visitors.

Other business

The City Council unanimously approved an agreement for building inspection services between All-Croix Inspections Corp. and the City of Prescott for two years. Todd Dolan of All-Croix Inspections Corp. clarified that, aside from a few price increases, the contract is essentially the same as the one the city has had with the company for the past 18 years.

“I believe our partnership has contributed to the health, safety, and welfare of your community,” he said.
