Why you should hire people with disabilities

Wisconsin has been working to highlight and celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month throughout the entire month of October. During this month, businesses were encouraged to connect with disability advocates, families, and friends to learn about the incredible talents that Wisconsinites with disabilities can bring to the workplace. This vital workforce is frequently overlooked, but it is critical given that one in every five Wisconsin adults has a disability. That is why I will continue to make it a priority for the state to assist these individuals in obtaining the tools and skills they require to overcome the barriers that keep them from finding work and to encourage businesses to consider this important talent pool.

In the most recent budget, for example, I voted to provide our vocational rehabilitation agency (DVR) nearly $190 million. This organization is on the front lines of helping people in the state find and keep jobs, and they believe that anyone and everyone can work. When a person is connected to DVR, they meet with a counselor to set an employment goal based on their interests. DVR then assists with job searching, career counseling, training, and the provision of assistive technology.

DVR can help you connect with this talented and motivated pool of potential employees as an employer. According to research, hiring people with disabilities can assist businesses in maintaining a competitive edge in the workforce while also lowering employee turnover. Once connected with DVR, they will assist you in recruiting and gaining access to the necessary planning sources to assist this individual at no cost.

DVR will work with you to learn about your company and match the candidates they have to your specific needs. This includes new employees as well as adults who have previously worked, and will assist you with full-time, part-time, or temporary employees.  Furthermore, there are a number of financial incentives available to you as a business, such as the federal work opportunity tax credit, fidelity bonding, and assistance with on-the-job training costs.

And DVR can help both large and small businesses. For example, Kwik Trip continues to work with DVR because they recognize the importance of hiring people with disabilities. They currently employ over 400 retail assistants in Wisconsin, with many more openings throughout the state. Furthermore, companies such as Mayo Clinic, River Falls Hospital, and Rice Lake Weighing Systems participate in the Project Search program, which connects high school students with internships to help them gain work experience and explore and find a career in our area.

If you are interested in connecting with this network of skilled talent, please reach out to our local DVR Business Service Consultant at dvr@dwd.wisconsin.gov or call 1-800-442-3477.
