Prescott continues winning streak, Ellsworth has off week

The Wildcats had another great week of golf, taking home second place on Monday at Eau Claire North and winning in Rice Lake at Turtleback Golf Course.

Mahlia McCane continues to play at an elite level, leading the team in score at both events, shooting a 40 in both rounds. She took third and second place respectively in individual scoring. Another standout performer this week was Ellie Krueger who shot a 41 at Eau Claire North and a 42 in Rice Lake, good for fourth and third place.

Overall, the Wildcats had all 10 scoring players shoot rounds in the 40’s this week, including five top 5 finishes in both events combined.

McCane, Teckla Wahlstrand and Nathalie Rotsaert now hold the second, fifth and ninth places in the individual conference standings. McCane trails by a single point for first place. Coincidentally, River Falls is also now only one point behind conference leader Hudson having taken second place after them twice and won over them only once.

Tim LaVold, coach of the Wildcats, said the whole team is playing at the level he was hoping for this year, and that they are getting better every time they go out.

The Wildcats continue Big Rivers Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Chippewa Falls to play at Lake Wissota Golf Course.

Ellsworth Panthers

The Panthers had a tough week of golf, taking a competitive fifth place at both Amery and at home in Ellsworth.

Lexi Marks played two good rounds, finishing in the top 10 in scoring at both events, shooting a 48 last Thursday at the Amery Golf Club and a 46 on Tuesday at the Ellsworth Country Club. Addy Huppert had the best round of the week for the Panthers on Thursday, shooting a 42 and finishing sixth overall in Amery. Marks and Huppert now hold two of the top 12 spots in the individual conference standings with ninth and 12th overall, respectively.

The Panthers will head to Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax on Tuesday for an invitational before continuing Middle Border Conference play on Thursday at Bristol Ridge Golf Course in Somerset.

Prescott Cardinals

It was a big week for the Cardinals as they continued their big year with back-to-back wins, first on Monday at Amery Golf Club and then again on Thursday at Ellsworth Country Club.

The Cardinals were led by their two freshmen on Monday as Macy Reiter and Layla Salay finished with a 39 and a 41 respectively, good for first and third place on the day. Altogether, Prescott won by 34 strokes.

Thursday was the same result but by the opposite means. After winning by such a large margin in Amery, the Cardinals won by their slimmest margin of the year in Ellsworth.

Prescott still had five players in the top 10, but nobody finished higher than fifth. Lydia Feran led the team by score on Thursday for the first time ever, shooting her career-best nine-hole round with a score of 41.

After the turnover in the offseason, it was fair to speculate whether Prescott’s dynasty was coming to an end; however, they are putting that talk to rest. Every member of the Cardinals roster now holds a spot in the top eight in the individual conference standings, and two freshmen hold two of the top three spots. Reiter is in third place with a one-point lead over junior Gabbi Matzek, who’s in fourth, and Layla Salay rounds out the top 5 only two points back from Matzek.

Next week is a big one for the red birds as they travel to the site of the state tournament at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison to play the Brookfield Central Invitational. This experience affords the Cardinals an opportunity to play against elite level competition as they will be one of only two teams in attendance that are not from D1 schools. It will also be extremely advantageous for them as it provides an exclusive preview of what playing a competitive round on this course is like in advance of the state tournament.
