18th It Takes A Village Ecumenical Concert: A Triumph of Community Spirit

RIVER FALLS – Sunday, Feb. 25, Ezekiel Lutheran Church became a haven of harmony and goodwill as it hosted the return of “It Takes A Village Ecumenical Concert.” After a hiatus caused by COVID-19, this annual event has returned for its 18th edition, bringing together musicians and attendees from across our community. It once again proved to be a resounding success, leaving hearts uplifted and spirits soaring.

More than 400 community members gathered to partake in an evening of musical enchantment, showcasing the remarkable talents of musicians from our very own area. The lineup featured an array of esteemed groups including the Ezekiel Lutheran Chancel Choir and Worship Band, University Community Chorus, United Church of Christ Choir, Croix Chordsmen Barbershop Chorus, Pierce County Ecumenical Choir, and culminated in a grand finale with over 100 combined musicians forming a mass choir. The concert crescendoed to a fitting conclusion with a rendition of "Be the Change," arranged by the talented L. Farnell and directed by Debra Fristad, leaving a lasting impression on all in attendance.

Yet, amidst the joyous melodies and harmonious choruses, the concert also served as a poignant reminder of the stark disparities faced by communities less fortunate than our own. As attendees sat in the comfort of the sanctuary, it was difficult to comprehend the daily struggles endured by our brothers and sisters in Haiti. We are often guilty of taking for granted the basic amenities we enjoy here in the United States – uninterrupted electricity, paved roads, and clean, drinkable water, luxuries that are but distant dreams for many in Haiti.

The reality of life in Haiti, fraught with sky-high inflation, political instability, gang violence, and pervasive fear for safety, especially in the communities surrounding the capital of Port-au-Prince, was brought sharply into focus. However, amidst these challenges, there shines a beacon of hope in the form of Haitian Relief Services (HRS), a non-profit organization founded in 1997 and based in River Falls, dedicated to supporting the community of Gunthier, Haiti.

The contributions from the concert, totaling just over $19,500 and gathered through voluntary donations, will be instrumental in upholding HRS's noble mission. In Gunthier, a community facing significant challenges, HRS supports a school serving 650 students, an orphanage providing a home for 25 children, and a health center. Through their steadfast dedication and relentless endeavors, HRS is effecting real change in the lives of those they assist, providing much-needed hope and opportunity.

During the concert, special recognition was given to the founders and leaders of HRS, Captain Pat O'Malley and Dr. Curt Larson, whose dedication over more than two decades has been instrumental in shaping the organization's success. In December 2023, the baton of leadership was passed on, as Joy (O'Malley) Richards assumed the role of President, and Jeanette Juetten took on the responsibilities of Treasurer. Their passion and vision ensure that the legacy of compassion and service established by Captain O'Malley and Dr. Larson continues to flourish, inspiring us all to be agents of change in our global community.

As we reflect on the triumph of the 18th “It Takes A Village Ecumenical Concert,” let us not only revel in the beauty of music but also recommit ourselves to the values of empathy, solidarity, and service. Together, as a community united in purpose and compassion, we can indeed be the change that our world so desperately needs.
