Softball
Ellsworth went on a tear, beating Osceola 14-7 and 10-0 and Altoona 13-11 and 9-7 in eight innings. The Panthers got a walk-off three-run blast from Aliza Acker and a sixth inning grand slam from Ava Whipple in the 13-11 win and homers from Brinklee Graetz and Karli Gutting in the 9-7 win. Ellsworth is 15-5 overall and 9-3 in conference, good for third place.
Prescott had a 4-1 week, beating Baldwin-Woodville 10-8, Osceola 11-1 twice, Granstburg 12-1 and losing to Fall Creek 3-0. Prescott’s brilliant pitching helped the team move to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in conference. Tied with Ellsworth in the Middle Border, the two will square off on May 13 and 15.
EPC lost 6-4 to Durand-Arkansaw and 8-1 to Mondovi, turning the week around with a 7-4 win over Clayton/Turtle Lake. The squad is now 5-13 overall and 2-9 in conference play on the year.
River Falls lost 7-1 and 15-3 to Rice Lake before beating St. Croix Central 2-1. The Wildcats are 8-12 with a 1-9 conference record.
Spring Valley lost its three games on the week, losing to Colfax 5-4, Glenwood City 9-2 and Boyceville 14-0.
Baseball
River Falls split its rivalry games with Hudson in a pair of pitching duels. River Falls won the first 2-0 and lost the second 3-1. Over the weekend the Wildcats fell 12-6 against Wausau East. River Falls is 8-6 on the year and 4-4 in conference.
Prescott had a perfect 3-0 week, sweeping Amery 6-0, 6-5 and besting Elk Mound 8-7. A four-game win streak has the Cardinals at 12-3 on the year and locked into a tie for the conference lead with Altoona at 7-3.
Ellsworth had a tough week, falling 10-0 and 12-11 to Somerset and 8-7 against Spring Valley. The Panthers are 6-10 on the year with a 3-7 conference record.
Spring Valley paired the win over Ellsworth with a 5-1 win over Colfax and 11-3 loss against Glenwood City. The Cardinals are tied for third in conference with a 5-4 record and an 8-6 overall record.
Elmwood/Plum City lost 7-0 to Durand, 14-1 to Mondovi and 19-1 to McDonell Central, but defeated Cochrane-Fountain City 14-4 with a Lucas Glaus home run.
Boys Golf
Prescott and Ellsworth got some conference action in on May 6, playing nine holes in Osceola and nine holes in Amery. In Osceola, Prescott finished two strokes out of the top spot, taking third with a 166. Tyler Reiter picked up another win with a 36. Ellsworth finished sixth of eight at the event. In Amery, Prescott took second with a 160 and Ellsworth tied for seventh with a 182. Reiter finished third with a 37 and Prescott’s Sam Vesperman was right behind him with a 38.
River Falls took fourth of eight at a Big Rivers Conference event in Eau Claire and also took on some of Minnesota’s best at a Rochester event.
Spring Valley/Elmwood/Plum City competed in Durand for a pair of events. First they took fifth of six with a 206, then they tied for fourth with a 191.
Track and Field
Prescott, Spring Valley and Ellsworth took part in the Amery Invitational on May 6. The Prescott boys took second and girls took sixth. Ellsworth finished ninth of 16 on both sides and Spring Valley placed 13th for boys and 16th for girls.
Prescott, River Falls and Ellsworth were also at the Stan Barr Relays in New Richmond. River Falls took fifth out of the girls’ teams out of 15 and fifth of 16 on the boys’ side. The Prescott boys took sixth and girls 12th while the Ellsworth boys were 15th.
The River Falls boys bested New Richmond, Eau Claire North and Menomonie in Menomonie on May 6. The girls took third at the event.
EPC competed at the Durand-Arkansaw Invitational, continuing to find their perfect lineup.
Boys Tennis
River Falls lost to Eau Claire North 5-2 May 8 and Ellsworth fell 6-1 to Baldwin-Woodville on May 6. Conference events are on the horizon as Ellsworth will compete in the MBC Tournament May 20 at St. Croix Central and River Falls competes in the BRC Tournament at Eau Claire Memorial the same day.
Girls Soccer
River Falls had a dominant week, beating Menomonie 3-0 May 6 and New Richmond 4-1 May 8. The wins moved the Wildcats to 7-3-2 overall and 5-0-1 in conference, tied for first with Eau Claire Memorial with Hudson just a point behind with one less match played at 5-0-0. Hudson plays Eau Claire Memorial on May 13 and River Falls on May 15, potentially reshaping the conference outlook.
