Around the County: Prescott baseball to play for conference’s top spot

Prescott went 3-0 on the week, beating St. Croix Falls 5-4 and St. Croix Central 4-0 and 2-0. Prescott is now a game out of the top conference spot at 4-2 with an overall 8-2 record. The Cardinals play Altoona twice in the coming week with the top Middle Border Conference spot on the line.

Ellsworth split two games against Amery, losing 14-10 before winning 12-2. The 22 runs were notable for a Panther squad that has now reached double-digit runs in three consecutive games. Ellsworth is 5-6 on the year with a 2-4 conference record.

River Falls fell to 5-2 after a tough week, losing 8-0 to Champlin Park and 15-11 to Eau Claire Memorial.

After beating EPC 7-2 Monday, Spring Valley lost 5-4 to Elk Mound and 11-1 to Mondovi. The Cardinals are 5-3 overall and 3-2 in Dunn-St. Croix play. EPC finished the week with a 7-1 loss to Boyceville and a 2-0 loss against Glenwood City.

Softball

As the conference’s lone 4-0 squads, Ellsworth and Baldwin-Woodville did battle for a pair of games. Ellsworth got out to a slow start at home and could not rally in a 16-12 loss, but bounced back to win 7-2 on the road. The two are now in a three-way tie with Somerset for the top spot.

Prescott is right behind the trio at 4-2 in conference, splitting with Altoona with an 11-6 win and 9-6 loss.

River Falls dropped a pair to Hudson 8-3, 10-9 to fall to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in Big Rivers play.

EPC had a busy week going 2-2. The Wolves beat Alma Center Lincoln 16-11 and Glenwood City 3-0 and lost to Boyceville 11-1 and Regis 12-2. The squad is now 4-7 overall and 2-5 in conference.

Spring Valley had a tough week, losing 9-4 to Durand-Arkansaw, Elk Mound 10-0 and Mondovi 13-3 and is still searching for a first win.

Boys Golf

River Falls took on two Big Rivers Conference meets on the week. First, the Wildcats took second in Chippewa Falls with a score of 149. The Wildcats then took fourth in Rice Lake, but were just two strokes out of second with a 152.

Ellsworth and SV/EPC competed at the Whitetail Invitational at Colfax, where Ellsworth scored a 362 and Spring Valley scored a 401, placing them in 11th and 17th of 18 teams.

Track and Field

Ellsworth competed at Durand-Arkansaw, placing eighth of 10 girls teams and eighth of 10 boys teams. Prescott attended the Elk Mound Invite, taking fifth of six in the boys standings and sixth in the girls’.

The River Falls boys took fifth of nine at the Rice Lake invitational with the girls taking seventh. The Wildcats were also present at the UWEC Distance Night, picking up some big wins.

At the Clear Lake Invitational, Spring Valley finished eighth of 12 teams in the girls’ standings and ninth for boys. EPC competed in Colfax with Colin Manor winning the 800- and 1,600-meter races, Brewer Link taking the high jump and long jump crowns, Aurora Sampair winning the pole vault, Allison Sauve winning the triple jump and Alexis Thalacker winning the 800.

 

Boys Tennis

River Falls lost 5-2 to Aquinas and 7-0 to Big Foot during a 0-2 week. Ellsworth also went 0-2 on the week, losing 7-0 to Eau Claire North and 6-1 to Wausau West.

 

Girls Soccer

River Falls soccer took back to the pitch and won in dominant 3-0 fashion over Wausau West on Friday night. The Wildcats are now 3-2-1 on the year with a 1-0-1 conference record.
