Softball
Spring Valley got its first two wins of the season, beating Elmwood/Plum City 14-11 and Unity 9-5. The Cardinals found an offensive force at the right time with the postseason weeks away.
Ellsworth’s week was as busy as it gets, going 2-3 against some of the area’s best. Middle Border contender Somerset vaulted the Panthers in the standings with 4-3 and 10-2 wins over them. Ellsworth bounced back with three games in Lakeville. The squad won 20-5 over Minneapolis Southwest and 18-4 over Minnehaha Academy, losing 14-3 to Lakeville North.
Prescott had a five-game week of its own, winning 22-0 and 15-0 over Amery and 3-2 over Hudson and losing 4-2 to Baldwin-Woodville and 5-3 to McDonell Central. Prescott and Ellsworth are each 11-5 overall, with Prescott sitting at 6-3 in conference and Ellsworth at 5-3.
River Falls took Menomonie for two games and Shell Lake for two games. The Menomonie games did not go their way, losing 6-4 and 11-4. The Wildcats bounced right back to win 9-0 and 11-1, moving to 7-10 overall and 1-7 in conference.
EPC lost 8-6 to Clear Lake after the loss against Spring Valley.
Baseball
Prescott had its shot at the top spot in the Middle Border Conference; however, taking on the current conference leader in Altoona resulted in a split. The Cardinals are still boasting a 9-3 record (5-3 in conference) after a 1-0 loss and 8-5 win.
River Falls lost a pair of conference games against New Richmond 9-8 and 3-0, but swiftly bounced back to beat Cumberland 11-1. At 7-4 on the year, the Wildcats now take on rival Hudson for a pair of matchups.
Ellsworth split a pair of games against Baldwin-Woodville to move to 6-7 overall and 3-5 in Middle Border Conference play. It was the third consecutive conference split for an Ellsworth team that is finding its footing.
EPC put up strong numbers in the run column, but it was not enough in 11-7 and 10-7 losses to Spring Valley and Clear Lake. Robbie Duffy belted a home run against Spring Valley. The team is 2-10 overall and 1-7 in conference.
Spring Valley beat EPC in the rivalry matchup and lost to Boyceville 7-0 and Baldwin-Woodville 10-9. The Cardinals are still fighting for positioning in the top half of the conference, holding a 6-5 record (4-3 in conference) to sit in fourth.
Track and Field
The Baldwin-Woodville Meet on April 29 brought Prescott, EPC and Ellsworth to town to compete. Prescott’s boys squad got a massive result, winning the 10-team event, with the girls taking fifth.
The Ellsworth boys took sixth with the girls taking ninth, and the EPC girls took sixth while the boys took 10th. EPC junior Lillian Pullen broke the school record 100-meter dash with a time of 12.87, placing second of 62 runners.
River Falls hosted the Wildcat Open featuring Menomonie, Hudson and New Richmond. The Wildcat girls finished fourth and boys finished third. They then took to Eau Claire for the Old Abe Invitational with the boys finishing atop the seven-team event and the girls placing fourth.
The Spring Valley boys and girls each won at the Mondovi Invitational on April 30 and at the May 1 Boyceville meet, the boys took fifth of 11 and the girls took ninth. EPC was also at the event with the girls taking fifth and the boys taking ninth.
Boys Golf
Prescott got a win at the Bloomer Invitational with a score of 306. Senior Tyler Reiter won the event by two strokes. Ellsworth took ninth of 24 teams at the event and SV/EPC took 22nd. Prescott and Ellsworth did not have the same success in Hudson on May 1, competing at a border battle against some of the area’s best, each placing in the bottom third of the standings.
SV/EPC took sixth of six teams at a Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet. Freshman Ruger Peavey tied for fifth place with a score of 41.
Girls Soccer
River Falls went 2-1-0 on the week to move to 5-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play. The Wildcats beat Eau Claire North 4-0 and Superior 3-1 before losing 3-1 to Kimberly.
Boys Tennis
Ellsworth took on a couple of matchups April 30, beating Ashland 5-2 and losing to Superior 6-1. River Falls split with New Richmond 4-3 each time, beat Superior 6-1 and lost to Hudson 5-2.
