Boys Basketball
Elmwood/Plum City had a massive week for momentum as the season enters its final weeks, beating Eleva-Strum 71-30, losing to Durand-Arkansaw 67-40 and beating Boyceville 72-66. Lucas Glaus posted 34 against Eleva-Strum and against Boyceville, which was paired with Brewer Link’s 18 and Logan Auth’s 13 against Boyceville and Auth’s 14 against Eleva-Strum. The Wolves are 6-12 overall and 2-8 in Dunn-St. Croix Conference play after the week.
Spring Valley’s winning streak is back up to five, beating Colfax 76-54 and Mondovi 48-36. The Cardinals still stand at the top of the conference with a 15-3 overall record and a 9-1 conference record.
River Falls had a tough 0-2 week against two solid Big Rivers Conference teams, losing 74-36 to an Eau Claire Memorial team that is 11-0 in conference and 52-40 to New Richmond. After the losses, River Falls is still right in the heart of the conference standings with a 5-6 record, in a three-way tie for fourth and a game out of third. The WI/MN Border Battle hosted by River Falls was postponed to this coming Saturday due to weather. The event brings together four top teams from each side of the border to play basketball games to prove who is the better state. River Falls takes on West De Pere at 1 p.m. with three games from other teams to follow.
Ellsworth’s season of thrilling wins continued in the Panthers’ lone game of the week, taking a road win over Amery 81-72. Ellsworth got 24 from George Rohl, 22 from Omar Coulson and 18 from Gavin Puhrmann. With a four-game winning streak, Ellsworth is 12-5 overall and 7-3 in conference, good for third in the standings.
Girls Basketball
Prescott won a thrilling conference battle at home against Altoona, with an inside bucket from Jeanne Rohl in the final minute leading the Cardinals to a 37-36 win. The Cardinals moved to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in conference, good for third in the Middle Border.
River Falls went 1-2 on the week, but took care of business in the lone conference game. The Wildcats lost 51-36 to Colfax, beat New Richmond 66-38 and lost to Blaine 72-30. In the win, River Falls got 23 from Abigail Treichel and a career high 21 from freshman Rylan Sticht. The Wildcats are 5-6 in conference play, a three-way tie for fourth of eight teams.
Ellsworth lost 60-40 to Baldwin-Woodville and 65-49 to Boyceville on the week, moving the Panthers to 6-14 on the year.
Spring Valley lost its lone game this week 64-14 to Elk Mound on Thursday to fall to 9-12 overall and 3-8 in conference.
EPC played Colfax twice this week, losing 68-22 Feb. 4 and 59-34 Thursday. The team is now 1-18 overall and 0-11 in conference.
Wrestling
It was a busy week for the Ellsworth team that first hosted a tri, beating Spring Valley/Elmwood 46-29 and followed it with a win over Unity 64-16. Ellsworth lost the Golden Shoe rivalry to River Falls, but put up a fair fight in a 43-32 Wildcat win.
Regionals take place over the weekend, where the county teams will look to begin the march to State.
Hockey
The St. Croix Valley Fusion won their lone game this week over the Eau Claire Area squad 5-4. The team’s final regular season game against the CFM Sabers is Feb. 11. St. Croix Valley enters the final game with a 14-9-0 record and a 5-2-0 conference record, good for a tie for first with Western Wisconsin.
River Falls’ boys squad lost 7-4 against New Richmond and 8-6 against Hudson. They have found their offense with two games to play, taking part in some high-scoring affairs. The Wildcats are fourth in the eight-team Big Rivers Conference with an overall record of 10-12-0 and a conference record of 6-6-0.
Boys Swimming and Diving
River Falls had a big weekend at the Big Rivers Conference Swim and Dive meet, taking fourth as a team. Daniel Carns broke his own school record with a 47.63 score in the 100 freestyle to take first and also took first in the 50 freestyle to make first team All-Conference in both.
The 200 freestyle relay team made second team All-Conference and Ty Wise joined them as an honorable mention.
Sectionals at Ashwaubenon take place Saturday where River Falls will make the push for State.
Gymnastics
River Falls is heading toward the postseason, competing at the Big Rivers Conference meet Feb. 22 at Chippewa Falls.
