Around the County: Teams solidify conference positioning in final weeks

Girls Basketball

Prescott finished the week with a 1-1 record, sneaking out a conference win 75-67 over Somerset before falling to McDonnell Central 74-67. The conference win pushed the Cardinals to 5-4 and third place with an overall record of 8-9.

River Falls split its games on the week, losing 75-36 on the road against a top-tier Eau Claire Memorial team that has not lost a conference game before taking down Chippewa Falls on the road 47-31. River Falls is finding its stride at the right time, winning three of the last four games to improve to 5-13 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

Ellsworth also split its games, beating St. Paul Central 65-36 with 29 points from Morgan Halverson and losing 55-40 to Altoona to close the week. Ellsworth is 6-11 overall and 0-9 in conference play.

Spring Valley had trouble in conference play on the week, dropping games to Colfax 66-33 and Mondovi 65-32, but recovered against Frederic with a 53-29 win. The Cardinals are 9-11 on the year with a 3-7 conference record.

Elmwood/Plum City was no match for a pair of Dunn-St. Croix squads, losing 63-21 to Durand-Arkansaw and 73-18 to Boyceville. The losses bumped the team to 1-16 overall and 0-9 in conference.

Boys Basketball

It was a perfect 3-0 week for the Spring Valley Cardinals, picking up a 69-34 win over EPC, a 64-42 win over Glenwood City and a 68-38 win over Frederic. The week was important for the Cardinals who now sit at 13-3 overall and 7-1 in conference, clinging onto the top spot in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference.

Ellsworth had the hot hand this week, winning over Middle Border competitors St. Croix Central 47-41 and Altoona 56-55 in overtime. The overtime win was the third the Panthers have picked up this season, showcasing truly how many thrilling finishes they have had. Ellsworth is 11-5 overall and 6-3 in conference, good for third place of eight teams.

Prescott opened the week with a loss 58-52 at home against Osceola in a game for the top spot in the Middle Border, following it nicely with a rebound win 69-55 over Somerset. At 11-6 overall and 7-2 in conference, the Cardinals trail only 8-1 Osceola.

River Falls took a tough loss at Superior on Jan. 28, losing 48-34 to a team that seemingly had every answer defensively. The Wildcats responded well later in the week, winning 65-43 against Chippewa Falls on Friday. River Falls is right in the heart of a battle for conference positioning, with a 5-4 record slotting the team fourth of eight. Their overall record is 10-6 on the year.

EPC had an 0-3 week, starting with the loss to Spring Valley and continuing with losses to Mondovi 51-46 and Cochrane-Fountain City 65-44. EPC is 4-11 on the year with a 1-7 conference record.

Wrestling

Ellsworth got the job done against Prescott 69-6 but both Ellsworth and Prescott lost to St. Croix Central in conference duals Thursday.

Spring Valley/Elmwood picked up wins 53-29 over Ladysmith and 56-18 over Mondovi/Eleva-Strum. The team has had a lot of success of late as the postseason draws near.

River Falls took third at an invitational in Menomonie, including a win over Menomonie in the process. Vinny Costabilo picked up his 100th career win for River Falls earlier in the week, winning his matchup at Eau Claire North.

Hockey

The St. Croix Valley Fusion won three out of four on the week, beating Western Wisconsin 2-1, Hudson 4-1 and the Fox Cities Stars 2-1 and losing to Fond du Lac 4-2. The Fusion have two remaining regular season games on the year. The successful week moved them to 13-9-0 on the year with a 4-2-0 conference record slotting them into second place.

The River Falls Wildcat boys went 1-2 on the week with a 6-0 win over North Shore and a 7-1 loss to Eau Claire Memorial and a 3-2 loss to Superior. River Falls is an even 10-10-0 on the year with a 6-4-0 conference record putting the Wildcats in fourth of eight in conference play.

Boys Swim and Dive

River Falls won a conference battle against Menomonie on Jan. 28 95-70. Next up is the Big Rivers Conference meet Friday and Saturday in Hudson before Sectionals at Ashwaubenon the following weekend.

Gymnastics

River Falls had a great run at an invitational in La Crosse over the weekend, scoring a 139.475 as a team over the weekend to snatch a trophy. The event was a sign of significant progress for the team, as a 135.25 earned the Wildcats a win at the Winter Wonderland Invitational about a month ago, and that score was topped by four points. River Falls has two meets left before the Big Rivers Conference event at Chippewa Falls on Feb. 22.
