With Veterans Day approaching, I’d like to encourage you to attend one of the many ceremonies honoring veterans in our communities. They are always moving and remind me what being an American is truly about.

Here are some events happening in Pierce County:

Rock Elm Old Settlers Meeting: noon Thursday, Nov. 5, Rock Elm Methodist Church (551 170th St., Elmwood). Lunch will be served at noon, followed by a presentation on Rock Elm Civil War Veterans. This meeting is open to all that are interested, not limited to members of the Rock Elm Old Settlers group. Please RSVP so they can make sure to have enough of the traditional meal: chicken pot pie, squash, coleslaw, cranberry sauce, and pie. Free will donation.

Veterans Coffee Chat: 9:30 a.m. Nov. 7, The Sycamore (745 Sycamore St., River Falls). All veterans and their spouses are invited to enjoy coffee and pastries.

Veterans Day Concert: 7:45-8:15 a.m. Nov. 11, River Falls High School (818 Cemetery Road).

Salute to Veterans: 9 a.m. Nov. 11, Ellsworth Middle School gym (312 Panther Drive). Special guest speaker is Pierce County Veterans Service Officer Melissa Hildebrandt. Refreshments will be served afterward.

Elmwood Veterans Day Program: 9 a.m. Nov. 11, Wolf Den Gym (213 S. Scott St., Elmwood schools).

St. Joseph School Veterans Day Program: 9:45 a.m. Nov. 11, St. Joseph gym (281 Dakota S. S., Prescott).

Plum City Veterans Day Program: 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11, Plum City Middle/High School gym (907 Main St.)

Veterans Day Assembly, 1:30-2:30 p.m., Meyer Middle School (230 N. Ninth St., River Falls).

SV Veterans Day Celebration: 2 p.m. Nov. 11, Spring Valley Middle/High School gym (S1450 County Road CC). Doors open at 1:45 p.m.; enter through main doors (Door A).

Veterans Day Breakfast: 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21 at River Falls American Legion Post 121 (710 N. Main St.) Bring your appetite for scrambled eggs, pancakes, SOS (beef & gravy), assorted pastries, orange juice, and hot coffee! Join the Pathfinders and Post 121 Honor Guard for good food and community spirit.

I’m sure there are more that I haven’t seen information for yet, so if I missed any, please forgive me.

Attending one of these programs is a small way that we can show our veterans how much we appreciate their service and sacrifice. I’m glad our schools place such emphasis on this day.

I’d also like to encourage you to put a green lightbulb in your yard lights or front windows. You can read more about this endeavor in Operation Green Light in this newspaper. Let’s turn the whole county green!

Thank you to all veterans, American Legion posts, American Legion Auxiliary posts, the VFW, the 40 et 8 and all veterans organizations for your service and sharing your stories and time with us on this special day.
