ELLSWORTH — Older adults are invited to explore the seasonal work and beauty of an apple orchard at the next Growing Connections program from 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Ellsworth Public Library. Mark Christopher of Maple Leaf Orchard in Spring Valley will share insights into the year-round activities that keep an orchard thriving.

Mark and Sue Christopher planted their first apple trees in 1987, never imagining they would one day open a public orchard. Life’s unexpected turns led them to continue planting and establish Maple Leaf Orchard in 1997. Today, the orchard includes thousands of fruit trees, including apples, pears, tart cherries and plums, along with berries, grapes, pumpkins and squash.

Through a slideshow, Mark will take participants through the changing seasons at the orchard, from winter pruning and spring maple syrup production to summer beehive care and the busy fall harvest. He will also discuss how the orchard uses Integrated Pest Management to minimize pesticide use and support the long-term health of the farm. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions about growing fruit, pruning, beekeeping, maple syrup production and more. The program will also include a tasting of several apple varieties.

In addition to the presentation, participants will enjoy a hands-on seasonal activity decorating white gourds with dried flowers. All materials will be provided, along with light refreshments and time to visit with others. No gardening experience or “green thumb” is needed.

Growing Connections is a free monthly program for older adults that combines garden and nature themed programs along with creative activities to encourage brain health, learning and social connection. The program is offered in partnership with the Ellsworth Public Library and the Pierce County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC).

Programs take place on the first Wednesday of each month at the Ellsworth Public Library Makerspace, 388 W. Main St., Ellsworth. Space is limited, and preregistration is requested.
