Hubbers club five homers to the highway, coast to 16-4 victory

ELMWOOD — The Sunday morning storms that brought a delay to the game also gave a jolt to the Ellsworth Hubbers’ offense, with the squad barreling a whopping five home runs in a 16-4 win over the Elmwood Expos in seven innings.

Four different players sent the ball out of the ballpark, with Urban Broadway, Ben Fischer and Michael Koch each hitting one, and Kasey Bass hitting a pair.

“Good approach with all the guys,” Manager Jeremiah Paulson said. “It wasn’t just the home runs. It was patient at-bats, getting pitches you can handle and being aggressive when you get one. When the ball goes out it goes out.”

For Bass, it was not just the home runs that made it a big day, as he went 5-for-6 with two home runs, a double and two singles. The first homer of the day for Bass was a solo shot roped into right field in the third inning, giving the Hubbers a 2-0 lead. The second was the one that truly drained the chances for the Expos, with a three-run opposite field shot to take a 7-0 lead in the fourth. The homer was part of a 10-run fourth inning that also saw a laser three-run shot to right from Broadway.

“Just trying not to think, just swing,” Bass said. “Let everything else take care of itself.”

Bass made his presence felt in the field as well, making a lunging grab on a blooper before sprinting back to first base to snag a double play. Paulson said Bass has been on a hot streak in recent weeks, and being situated in the heart of the order, his play determines how the lineup performs.

“Guy in the middle of the lineup, he’s a lynchpin,” Paulson said. “When he’s going good it just adds to making your lineup dangerous.”

With the numbers the offense posted, the other side of the ball just needed to avoid a complete crumbling, and they did, with James Georgakas pitching a complete game and the defense making solid plays.

“The pitcher can be more aggressive, he can attack more, doesn’t have to be so fine,” Paulson said. “He can go out and throw how he wants to throw, and James did exactly that today.”

The hit parade lasted all weekend long, with the Hubbers picking up 11 runs in a win over the Bombers on Friday and eight against New Richmond on Saturday. While the Hubbers still picked up a loss Saturday against New Richmond, the team likes the way they are trending heading into the final stretch.

“Just huge, especially after a tough one last night in New Richmond,” Bass said. “Just to bounce back the way we did today was awesome.”

With one last week to go in the regular season, the Hubbers will need to lock in for a trio of league matchups. Ellsworth hosts Prescott Wednesday and heads to Spring Valley on Friday and River Falls on Saturday. To finish strong, the plan is simple: do what they did Sunday.

“More of this,” Paulson said. “Hit, pitch, play defense.”
