Hungry man kicks in pizza shop door

Last Thursday customers got a quite a surprise at a Prescott coffeehouse when a man kicked in the door at an adjacent pizza business, then wandered into the coffeehouse and fell asleep.

Troy Daniel Allen Shepard, 30, Mandan, ND, was ordered to pay $500 cash bail Friday, Oct. 13 in Pierce County Circuit Court on theft – movable property and criminal damage to property charges, both misdemeanors. If convicted, the maximum penalty for each charge is up to nine months in jail and/or fines up to $10,000.

According to the complaint:

On Thursday, Oct. 12 a complainant called 911 after witnessing a man kick the door open to Papa T’s Pizza at 202 Broad St. in downtown Prescott. She described the man as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and goggle-style glasses. She then saw him standing at the counter of the adjacent business, Twisted Oak Coffee House, talking to an employee.

When officers arrived, through they window they saw multiple people in the coffee shop. Inside the building, they found broken trim on the floor. Inside Twisted Oak, they saw the suspect sitting in a chair sleeping. An employee told police he had kicked in a door at Papa T’s, was acting strange and “creeping her out.” Police helped employees and patrons exit the coffee shop to a safer location.

Officers approached the suspect with both lethal and Taser cover. When they woke him up, he was told to “follow instructions and not do anything that would get him shot.” He followed orders and officers handcuffed him without incident. He denied kicking any doors.

After Shepard was placed in a squad, officers began investigating the businesses. The first glass door of Papa T’s where the pizza pickup is located was kicked in. The door jamb was damaged and it was obvious forced entry had been used to enter the business. Police also found a bathroom door with damage to the door jamb, indicating it had been forcefully opened. A witness reported seeing Shepard take a pizza box over to Twisted Oak. Further inspection revealed the suspect had tried to kick in the back door but didn’t succeed. The business owner said he’d review footage to see if anything else had been taken.

Shepard told police he has been working a lot and doesn’t get much time to eat. He said he was hungry but didn’t know whey he went into the pizza place. Since he smelled of alcohol, police requested a PBT which registered a .104 BAC. He was taken to Pierce County Jail without incident.

A status conference is scheduled at 1 p.m. Nov. 13 at Pierce County Courthouse.
