Letter to the editor: Women more important than politics

To the editor,

Every woman deserves the right to make reproductive health decisions, including access to safe and legal abortion, birth control and other forms of family planning. In Wisconsin, women have lost all rights to legal abortion due to an 1849 law that lacked women’s votes.

Reproductive rights ensure all women have their healthcare needs met while making informed decisions about their reproductive health. Without access to these basic rights, women's health and wellbeing are at risk. There have been numerous accounts of pregnant women being denied healthcare from miscarriages and enduring unnecessary and excruciating physical and mental suffering, some nearly dying from sepsis with their cries falling on deaf ears.

We can’t wait for mostly male legislators to notice we have suffered enough or there are preventable deaths due to an 1849 law written before we had medical advancements of defibrillators, EEG, and appendicitis treatment. Think of being denied care for appendicitis and told to wait at home until you develop sepsis and major organs start shutting down.

How can woman/motherhood be held sacred when maternal healthcare is the only sphere without compassionate patient/doctor consultation?

Reproductive rights are about gender equality, justice and empowerment. This law overwhelmingly affects low-income BIPOC people as they are more likely to have barriers accessing reproductive services. Denying bodily autonomy is discriminatory and a violation of human rights. Women are demanding the same rights and freedoms as men, including reproductive healthcare rights.

No matter who you are or what you believe, Wisconsinites can agree that women are more important than politics. I strongly urge voters to protect and expand reproductive rights by acting in solidarity with Wisconsin women and voting for Judge Janet in the upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court election.
