To the editor,
On April 2, there will be two Constitutional Amendments on the ballot that would 1) make it illegal to receive grant funding to administer elections, and 2) limit (without clear definition) who can perform tasks related to elections.
As we know, local municipalities are always strapped for funding to provide the services citizens expect. Running elections is expensive, and the biggest costs are equipment and salaries. If we don't have secure tabulating machines or enough people to manage the operation, confidence can be lost in the process and outcomes.
With limited budgets, clerks in red, blue and purple districts apply for grants from a variety of organizations. These monies are vital for small and large municipalities alike to ensure our elections run smoothly for everyone who wants to cast a ballot.
Vote NO April 2 on BOTH Constitutional amendments, and support your local clerks who are your neighbors working hard on everyone's behalf to certify your right to vote is secure and fair.
