Girls Basketball
The Elmwood/Plum City girls had been on a losing streak that dated back to February 2023; however, first year head coach Adrian Hook had the team improving by the day, cutting deficits of losses significantly. EPC got back in the win column Saturday, winning 42-32 over Chequamegon. The squad also took a competitive 46-34 loss Friday against Glenwood City.
Prescott split a pair of conference games, winning 51-36 against their rivals in Ellsworth on Jan. 14 and having no match for Baldwin-Woodville in a 62-25 loss Friday. The Cardinals are 4-3 in conference play, sitting in third, but the gap from the top widened as Baldwin-Woodville moved to 7-1.
Ellsworth took the loss to Prescott and followed it with a 37-31 nail biting loss to Osceola. Ellsworth is still looking for a first conference win at 0-7.
Spring Valley’s lone game of the week was a 64-58 heartbreaking loss against Boyceville on Friday. The Cardinals’ youth has shown at times, yet the bright spots have also shined during the 6-8 season (1-5 in conference).
River Falls took a pair of conference losses on the week, losing 56-37 Jan. 14 against Rice Lake and 58-51 against Eau Claire North on Friday.
Boys Basketball
Spring Valley had a three-game week, beating Luck 82-32 and Liberty Classical 91-81, losing to Durand-Arkansaw 43-41. The loss was a tough one in the fight for a conference title, but the Cardinals are still tied for the top spot at 4-1 with Durand-Arkansaw. Masyn Wolf and Cade Stasiek each had 30-point games this week for the Cardinals.
River Falls’ strong season hit a slight speed bump on the week, losing 61-60 against Eau Claire North on Thursday and 74-55 against Kaukauna on Saturday. The losses bumped the Wildcats to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in conference.
Ellsworth’s lone game of the weak was a tightly contested loss to Osceola on Jan. 14 66-60. Ellsworth is also 8-4 on the season, trailing 5-1 Prescott in conference by one game at 4-2.
Prescott’s week was also one with some heartbreakers, losing 46-45 in overtime at Baldwin-Woodville on Jan. 14 and 50-49 to Northwestern on Saturday.
EPC’s lone game came against one of the best around in Elk Mound, as the Wolves took a 64-43 loss Thursday. The squad is 1-4 in conference and 4-7 overall on the season.
Wrestling
Ellsworth had a dual against Arcadia on Thursday where the Panthers won 48-24. They followed that up with a ninth-place finish of 16 teams at the East Ridge Ruckus on Saturday.
River Falls’ Lincoln McCarty reached 100 career wins with a BRC quad win. It was a good week for the team as well, picking up a 57-23 win over Rice Lake.
Spring Valley/Elmwood showed out against Boyceville on Thursday in a 58-24 win. The win was followed by an eighth-place finish of 11 teams at the Chi Hi Wrestling Invitational. Jack Steinmeyer won the 215-pound division.
Prescott also competed at the Chi Hi Invitational, taking 10th as a team.
Hockey
River Falls boys hockey is out to a four-game win streak, beating Eau Claire North 4-2 and Menomonie 7-2 on the week. The streak has been massive for the Wildcats’ position in the Big Rivers standings, landing at fourth place of eight with a 5-3-0 record.
The St. Croix Valley Fusion played just once, losing 4-1 to the CFM Sabers on Jan. 14. The Fusion are 2-2-0 overall and 8-7-0 overall.
Gymnastics
After a Jan. 21 triangular at Eau Claire Memorial, River Falls takes a brief break until Jan. 30 when the Wildcats host a triangular of their own.
Boys Swim and Dive
River Falls is entering the final stretch before postseason play, taking on Hudson on Jan. 21 and Menomonie on Jan. 28 before the conference meet in February.
