PHS boys fall to New Richmond

The Prescott Boys Varsity Basketball team opened the 2021 portion of their season Saturday night, January 2nd, with a game at New Richmond. The Cardinals entered the night with a 6-2 overall record and a perfect 3-0 mark in the Middle Border Conference. The Tigers struggled a bit early in the year with a 1-3 overall record and a 1-1 conference record.

The teams battled back and forth in the first half with New Richmond holding a two-point lead at the break 43-41. New Richmond would take control of the game in the second half pulling away for the upset win 89-73. The Cardinals lived by the three-point shot once again as they shot a staggering 43 three-point field goals, making 15 for a 35% shooting percentage. The Tigers also forced 19 Cardinals turnovers on the night. New Richmond made 18 of 27 free throws to Prescott’s four of 10 from the charity stripe.

Jordan Malmlov continued his excellent sophomore season as he led the way with 30 points to lead all scorers. Malmlov made eight more three-point baskets on the night and added nine rebounds as well. Walker Lenz had a big night with 14 points and nine rebounds. Philip Seifert added 11 points and four assists. Ben Rohl chipped in with another eight points. Aiden Russell scored five points with seven rebounds, while freshman Dallas Wallin had an off night from the field with just four points, but he added nine rebounds and four assists.

With the upset loss, the Cardinals drop to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in conference on the season. Prescott returns to action on Tuesday, January 5th, as they travel to Division 3’s third ranked squad, St. Croix Central. The Panthers are 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Middle Border Conference.
