Receiving a new pastor Sept. 1, the congregations of Svea Lutheran and Tabor Lutheran welcomed Pastor Edward M. Groop and family. Groop had previously served at Grand Marais, Mich., arriving from Newberry.

Back at school for the 1973-74 academic year, an estimated 3,785 students were to be greeted by 30 faculty members Sept. 4 at UW-River Falls. Classes would begin on Sept. 7, with students arriving Sept. 2-3.

Aug. 25 1938

Administering the sacrament of confirmation at 2:30 p.m. at St. Martin’s Church in Cherma Aug. 29 was the Most Reverend William Richard Griffin, auxiliary bishop of La Crosse. Confirmation for those at St. Mary’s Church in Big River would take place later the same day at 7:30 p.m.

In field news from 1938, William McElroy had brought in a stock of sweet corn to the Journal office that measured 11 1/2 feet tall, said to be of the Evergreen variety. McElroy had raised it in his West Side garden.

Thos. Fleury, the St. Paul bank robber, was captured in Chicago, on Aug. 17, by Wm. A. Pinkerton, of Chicago and taken to St. Paul for trial.

Well may the Bible be called the lighthouse, situated on the headlands of nations, pointing the weary pilgrim to that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Beyond the power of darkness it established the defeat of death’s victory, while supreme and beautiful its banner of endless glory waves triumphantly forever…Then, and only then, will those pleasures enter the ind which will last forever, while the King of glory closes the pearly gates of heaven, and the child of believing faith rests below.—V.
