Plum City Care Center weathers bone-chilling temps

Posted

Monday morning began with sunshine, frigid temps and Monday Movers seated exercise group! Noel led a small crowd through the 30-minute workout and it felt wonderful to stretch out our muscles. We moved right into a Sing Along next and with Stacey on guitar, our large group of singers belted out the tunes until lunchtime! After the midday meal and mail delivery, it was time for Kitchen Corner baking group. Noel, along with the assistance of Chef Jeff, stirred up a pretty pink strawberry cake under the watchful eyes of “supervisor” Goldie Helwig! The afternoon activities culminated in a game of Tic Tac Toss in which LeRoy “Hank” Hankinson came in fourth place, Kay George and Herb Tschumperlin tied for third and Judy Thorn placed second. Kevin Bauer and Carol Bauer (Seasons) both came in first place this week! We ended the busy day with some supper and Monday night Bingo. Thank you to Teresa Fedie and Kathy Luebker for all their wonderful help with the game!

The bone-chilling cold weather continued into Tuesday as we gathered after breakfast for Mass with Father Jojo and Terry Pelzel; the service brought warmth to our souls, just as we prayed for higher temperatures to bring warmth to the world outside. Lunch followed and in no time at all Stacey wheeled out the popcorn machine to make a double batch of fresh, yummy popcorn for our Popcorn Social! The delicious treat brought a smile to everyone’s face and was quickly gobbled up by residents. As we continued into the afternoon, Pastor Darren from Lund Mission Covenant stopped by for church. We capped off the day with a little supper and then an evening of games with Willow!

We bowled our hearts out Wednesday morning, with Ave Maria students Dahlia and Gabe here to help out, and it was a tight competition throughout three rounds. Goldie Helwig came in fourth place, Shirley Klinski was the third-place winner and Jeff Halverson and Larry Thompson tied for second place! Our first-place winner was Kevin Bauer with a near perfect score of 29 points! Lunch and mail delivery followed soon after and then it was time for an afternoon of Fruit Bingo fun with Wanda Ebensperger and Lana Ingli. We are so thankful for all their help with our game! We are always on the edge of our seats to see who gets blackout first and this week Virgie Fritz was the big winner for a second week in a row! Everyone stuck around after bingo to attend the Mid-Week Social to grab a slice of strawberry cake, accompanied by a scoop of strawberry ice cream, and it was a delicious way to end the afternoon. Yum yum!

Thursday began with a delicious cup of coffee and the newspapers being shared with residents by Kathy Shingledecker at our Local News and Coffee group. We always appreciate everyone who stops by for a chat and to keep us informed on what is happening in our surrounding communities! Lunch followed and then Stacey had a few ladies lined up for manicures in the early afternoon. As nails were drying, we passed the time with conversation and one-on-one visiting. It was a pleasant and relaxing way to spend the day but soon, supper was ready and then it was time for an evening of Pokeno with Stacey!

Shuffleboard kicked off our Friday morning with many residents hoping to take home the title of first place! After three fun rounds, our fourth-place winner was Shirley Klinski, third place went to Larry Thompson and second place was awarded to Jeff Halverson. The first-place winner this week was Milda Bautch, thanks to her impressive third round score of a perfect 40 points! Our shuffleboard game took us almost to lunchtime and after the meal, several students from Ave Maria Academy stopped by for our monthly Book Buddies group to read to residents. Noel and Chef Jeff Halverson kept themselves busy at Snack Makers, whipping up tasty treats in preparation for Happy Hour---this week’s snack was ham and cheese crescent rolls!  Soon the dining room started to fill up with folks as we prepared for our weekly Happy Hour, this week with music by Jim Sexton. We had a grand time listening to timeless tunes and peppy polkas as we munched on the cheesy rolls! A yummy supper was served and then residents stuck around for our Friday movie night, where we watched “The Spy Next Door.”
