Plum City/Elmwood hung tough Saturday with one of the Dunn-St. Croix’s top teams but Elk Mound was able to hang on for a 56-51 victory in a game at Plum City High School.
The game was knotted at 27 at the intermission and the Wolves built a small lead to open the second half. The Mounders turned on the pressure that gave Elmwood/Plum City some troubles, and they grabbed the lead.
There were a lot of positives that Plum City/Elmwood Coach Adam Sticht saw from his team that is now 3-5 overall and 1-3 in league play.
“We’re getting there. We’re building up. We’re starting to buy into an entirely new system,” the first-year coach said. “For long stretches we’re playing great, but we’re just getting tired. We’ll be fine. I’m impressed by how we’re playing.”
The Wolves had a busy week, starting with a win over Alma/Pepin last Tuesday, 53-35. They then were defeated by Mondovi 58-37 on Thursday. Both of those games were played at Elmwood High School.
They travel to Boyceville, winless in Dunn-St. Croix play, Friday and head to Mondovi on Monday night.
“I’m real happy with the way the girls have played this week. We started off with a win, and today if we get a couple buckets that could have gone another way. Elk Mound is a very good program. We gave them everything they could handle. Our JV and our varsity, we’re both getting better. I’m happy we’re making progress.”
Anna Blanford led the Elmwood/Plum City offensive attack against Elk Mound with 13 points. Maggie Glaus had a huge game, as she had a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hannah Baier scored 10. Hailey McDonough scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds, while Hannah Forster had eight points, six rebounds and two assists. Lily Webb scored one point and had five rebounds and two assists, while Isabella Forster grabbed four rebounds and was also credited with one assist.
