Each year on Veterans Day, Americans come together to honor the men and women who have served our nation in uniform. Their sacrifices have protected the freedoms we enjoy and helped preserve the values that define our country.
At a time when our nation often finds itself divided on important issues, support for our veterans remains a cause that unites us. Regardless of our differences, we can all agree that those who answered the call to serve deserve our gratitude, respect and support.
That is why Pierce County is once again joining communities across the nation in Operation Green Light for Veterans, an initiative dedicated to recognizing the service and sacrifice of veterans and their families.
The responsibility to defend our nation does not end when military service concludes. As a community, we also share a responsibility to support those who served. For many veterans, the transition from military service to civilian life can present significant challenges, including access to health care, employment, housing and emotional support.
Operation Green Light serves as a visible reminder that our veterans are not alone. Beginning Nov. 4 and continuing through Veterans Day on Nov. 11, Pierce County will illuminate the Pierce County Courthouse and County Office Building in green. We encourage residents, businesses, schools and community organizations to participate by changing a single light bulb in an entryway, porch light or storefront to green.
A green light is a simple but powerful symbol. It tells veterans that they are seen, appreciated and supported by the community they helped protect.
While Operation Green Light focuses on the week leading up to Veterans Day, its message extends far beyond a single week of recognition. The campaign also helps raise awareness of the services and resources available to veterans and their families throughout the year.
This Veterans Day, we invite everyone in Pierce County to join us in showing appreciation for those who served. By participating in Operation Green Light, you can help send a visible message of gratitude and support to the veterans who have given so much in service to our nation.
Together, let's turn Pierce County green and shine a light on our veterans.
