Shots from the hip: Prescott basketball set to begin

Head Coach Owen Hamilton and the Prescott girls basketball team opened practice this week. The Cardinals finished second a season ago, one game behind conference champion Baldwin-Woodville. The Cardinals will have to find a way to make up for the loss of leading scorer and
rebounder Lila Posthuma who is now playing at Bradley University. Top returnees for Prescott included First Team All Conference selection Violet Otto. The talented sophomore scored 372 points a year ago and is one of the top returning players in the conference. Honorable Mention All Conference guard Rory Zuehlsdorf also returns. A senior, Zuehlsdorf was among the team’s top three in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals. Other returning letterwinners included Hannah Schommer, Leah French, Cadyn Hillebrand, and Kelsey Sterud. Prescott finished 16-10 overall last season.
Baldwin-Woodville, who advanced to the state tournament last season, returns a number of players and has been picked as the Middle Border Conference favorite. St. Croix Central, Amery, Somerset and Prescott are also expected to challenge for the top three spots in the conference in a league that Coach Hamilton calls “extremely balanced.”
Head Wrestling Coach Ian Ruble expects 20-25 athletes out for the sport this year. Along with a number of returnees, Ruble also anticipates several wrestlers returning to the mat after taking a year or two away. For the girls, grabbling fans can expect the number to increase over last year’s two female competitors. “The growth of the girls team is something I’m proud of. I’m a big proponent of the statement ‘anybody can wrestle’ so giving any student an opportunity to scrap on the mat is tremendous,” says Ruble.
Michigan Tech women's basketball senior guard Isabella Lenz tied her career-high with 23 points in the Huskies season opener, falling to Lewis University of Illinois, 68-57 at the Justagame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells on Friday. On Saturday, the Huskies rebounded with a
73-59 victory over Thomas Moore University of Kentucky. Michigan Tech raced to a 19-9 first quarter lead and never trailed. Lenz scored 15 points and led the team in assists as the Huskies finished 1-1 the opening weekend of the season. This week the Huskies will host Bemidji State
on Friday and Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday. Lenz continues her march toward 1,000 points and will enter this weekend with 955 career points. Lila Posthuma and the Bradley University Women’s basketball team opened their season with a convincing 70-32 victory over University of St. Francis (Illinois).
The high powered offense of Middle Border Conference champion Baldwin-Woodville proved to be too much for the Freedom Irish on Friday as the league champions bested the Irish by a score of 48-35. Baldwin-Woodville will now play the Winneconne Wolves in Medford for a chance to advance to the Division 4 finals in Camp Randall on Nov. 21. Additionally, the Northwestern Tigers, who Prescott easily defeated 42-8 during the regular season, will play Wrightstown for a spot in the Division 5 finals. And in Division 7 tiny Kenosha St. Joseph’s classic will take on the enrollment rich, public school behemoth Potosi/Cassville for the right to advance to
Madison’s Camp Randall Stadium.
The Prescott Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominations for induction into the Prescott Hall of Fame. Nominations will be accepted until June 1 with the Hall of Fame Induction Banquet Scheduled for October 2025. Nomination forms are available on the Prescott School District website. The most recent inductees were Ryan Berg, Jaci Kosin, and Steve Block.
The Barron Bears volleyball team won the WIAA Division 3 state championship with a 3-1 victory over private school La Crosse Aquinas on Saturday. It was Barron who ended the Prescott Cardinals Cinderella season in the sectional championship two weeks ago. And in WIAA Boys Volleyball Sussex-Hamilton won the state title with a 3-2 victory over Middleton. Today, there are 63 Wisconsin schools that field WIAA volleyball teams.
From the Department of Natural Resources: The DNR encourages the public to report any black bear den locations across Wisconsin to help with an ongoing study on black bear reproduction. The Black Bear Litter and Diet Survey will generate new estimates of black bear reproductive rates within each bear management zone, and these estimates will improve the accuracy of the
population models used in each zone. Additionally, researchers are investigating a connection between consumption of human food sources and bear reproduction since diet can affect cub survival rates and litter sizes.
The study will be entering its fourth year of surveying occupied dens in the Wisconsin bear range. The research team will take den reports statewide but is looking for more dens to survey in bear management zones C, D and E, which cover central and western Wisconsin.
Headshaker of the week. Many of us can remember when the Big 10 had 10 teams. Hence, the conference name “The Big Ten.” Now, 18 teams later, the conference is still referred to as the Big 10. Huh? It’s time to change the name. Perhaps the NCAA can sponsor a naming contest for the new 18-member league. But today it’s still known as the Big 10. Foolish. It’s a headshaker.
